Is the VW Golf as good as the Audi A3?

When I bought my mk6 Golf GTI back when they were the current model I had a similar decision to make. I preferred the Golf over the equivalent A3. I did, though, get leather seats in the Golf because I didn't want the kids spilling drinks over cloth.

But it depends, the two cars you're looking at evidently have different engines and will have different spec lists. If you want better quality interior plastics you buy the Audi, but a Golf at the same money will likely have more kit.

Personally I'd buy a Leon over a Golf.
Cool. Leons are minging so thats a definite no no
yes it is

the a3 has the vents in the middle of the dashboard for no decent reason other than to make it different to the golf. To achieve this they have had to put a screen on the top of the dash which just looks rubbish. Because it uses the stupid mmi interface they need a silly wheel on the centre console which is in the place the cupholders should be so they have to put the cupholders where the ashtray should be meaning they are in the way of the dashboard and the gearstick bumps into them.

Just buy a golf which is designed properly.

Ok. I'm going to Sheffield on Tuesday to have a look at a GTI for sale.

GTI all day long. The A3 is heavier, slower and more boring.

But yea, the Seats are now almost as nice inside as a Golf and a lot more for the money.

I recently changed my 1 series for a mark 6 Golf GTI. Got one with the leather interior. Very nice place to be, no regrets buying it. Good fun if you want to hoon it and if you want to take your time I can get around 42mpg on the motorway.

When I bought my Leon I had a choice, Golf R or Seat Leon Cupra. I went to multiple dealers for both and I was getting no kit with the Golf R, even worse when I discussed a GTI and it was more money than the R. When I went to Seat I got a good deal and all the kit I wanted. I also had the advantage I was trading in my Seat Ibiza Cupra.

There was very little difference between the Seat and the Golf in terms of interior quality.

It's not really though is it?

I've always found the A3 a bit of a pointless car really - if you want a premium car, buy one - if you want a small hatch or similar, then the Golf is a better package.

100% agree with this.

The materials used inside an A3 these days are pretty mediocre, and the only premium as far as I can tell is the badge perception.

The Golf GTI and R is pretty well specced anyways , orginally i was looking at the GTI but after speccing one vs R specced the difference was about £1300 more for the R. Cant see how the GTI can be more expensive than the R , unless it is the CS or CSS variant.

Agree with this. My housemate has a brand new A3 and it's not that great. I actually preferred the look/feel of the interior of the Golf hire car I had.

The S3 might be nice, but a standard A3 is pretty bland with acres of cheap plastic, probably like your A4?

No they are the same, the reason why it's nicer inside than his A4 is that his A4 was a platform introduced in 2007 wheras the A3 is a current generation platform.

So it's nicer inside just like a 2017 Mondeo is nicer inside than a 1997 C Class....

Sorry what I meant was when I added the options like performance pack, adaptive cruise etc, It was more than the basic R. At that point you may as well go all in. The R didn't come with adaptive suspension as standard where as the Cupra does.

ACC comes as standard from most 2014 Mk7 GTIs some earlier ones didnt have it as standard.

Agreed the Cupra has the Adaptive Dampers as standard, where as on the Golf it is a £830 option. Mines specced on it and im glad that i did.

I didnt even consider the Cupra as the styling wasnt to my taste but etto.

Going off course here but the interior of the current gen S3 is nicer than the current gen Golf R, having sat in both. There's not loads in it, but it's there. The S3 only makes sense when it's cheaper than the Golf. I got more money off the S3 than a similar spec Golf R. Both were new and with a 3 month + wait time.
