As title really. Is there a plug in that enables you to play MKV files through WMP using OS win 7

Or am I better just downloading VLC player.

thanks.

win 7 has the codecs to play 'mkv' files.

installing divx for windows will make use of those codecs, and you'll be able to watch your files in WMP or even Media Center

mpc-hc is a better choice IMO - part of CCCP.

I've recently started using the KMPlayer and it seems pretty good too!

I use Shark007 codes (with x64 components) and use 65-bit WMP to play FLAC audio (ace for that).

I find them to be very good codecs, but VLC will also do the job. It's personal preference I think at the end of the day :)

Only reason I ask, is I am presently using 'MakeMKV' then 'Handbrake' to put all my own DVD's onto my computer then onto an external HD which is plugged into my PS3 so I can watch any of my DVD's without physically having to put any in.

As the PS3 doesnt play MKV files (as far as I can tell)

Just install DivX codec, it allows me to Stream mkv files to my 360 (using it as an extender in Windows Media Center)

Tried playing on the PS3 once, I think it worked?

ok bit confused now.

just downloaded divx pro codec 6.9.2 (from DivX website) and it says Trial, 15 days left and then a option to buy. I thought this used to be free?

has something changed or what ?

You don't need any codec, WMP in WIn7 plays them out the box anyway. You just need the right splitter for certain codecs contained in mkv files (dual audio, sub streams etc).

Haali Media splitter is what is needed.

Anyway, MPC-HC as mentioned, s the best.

You realise what an mkv file is yeah?

Your mkv file(s) probably use a non standard codec for a/v. MKV is just the container and WMP plays the most standard stuff (h.264/ac3 etc).

I used to use shark007's pack, but recently he's started force installing the ask toolbar in the installation, you're not given an option for it. The only way to stop it is to download a registry file from his site and adding it to the registry which apparently stops it.
I've simlply stopped using it.
