Hi guys, sorry for the title i dont know how to explain it or what term to use. I do understand networking quite well, i work on fairly large scale networks, but all our gear is enterprise class (engage!) and its somewhat beyong what i need.

Here is the deal, i operate a small domestic network in a block of flats. We recently had a vote on upgrading to 100mb, some of the residents declined and thus all residents miss out. Now for me the hike from 10meg to 100meg is basically mandatory, the other residents know this and i believe they are hoping i will be forced to front the entire monthly fee.

My intent then is to upgrade the pipe (FTC vDSL) but limit all residents but myself to a 10mb connection unless they chip in. Basically i want gated bandwidth. 10mb is crippling everyone here but as i say my belief is that they only want me to pay because im the techie :D.

Solutions? Any reasonable priced routers do this? Im not very up to speed on hardware.

Thank you all

Managed switches such as the Netgear GS105E (note the E) can usually bandwidth limit individual ports in 0.5MBit/s steps (depending on brand/features) which in my experience works better than most consumer level routers unless you are using proper enterprise kit for bandwidth management.

(Some routers might have the same or better level of functionality like the Asus above though my experience with my rtn66u generally didn't do as well as a managed switch).

EDIT: Not necessarily a solution for wireless though unless you also setup an AP through it.

im only on a bt router at mo, i have several managed switches on site tho so i could look at those! Gigabit Dlink jobs so might have something. Ill look into those and get back to you all depending! Thank you!

We'd to know the answers to the questions asked really. How do the residents actually connect to the internet? Does the line come in to a communal place and then a wired infrastructure to each flat or one WAP that everyone connects to or something else?

On the face of it, I'd be tempted by the managed switch route mentioned if it's a wired onfrastructure and if wireless I'd replace your WAP with a Ubiquiti access point that supports up to 4 SSIDs, each with different bandwidth limits. You connect to one and they connect to another.

BigT : The line comes in to the router obviously which has a singe gigabit run to a managed switch. From this switch several cables run to WAP's and machines. One run goes to a second managed switch that distributes to my equipment. So in theory if i can limit all ports apart from the WAN-switch uplink and the link to my personal switch then everyone else will have limits

Am i right?

You're opening a can of worms here. Not technically but legally. You will be the person responsible for the kiddie porn spotted in transit. You will be responsible for the pirated video being downloaded. Etc.

Get yourself a separate 100 Mb link and leave the 10 Mb link in the hands of the Residents Association.

I got the impression that this was the current situation anyway because OP says they operate it on behalf of the flats. Whether he's sharing out 10Mbps equally or sharing out 100Mbps in a skewed fashion, bill payer (person with whom the ISP contract is) is going to be responsible for all the nasty stuff. I think it is a very admirable thing to do to help out presumably other non-techie residents, but I wouldn't hold the contract personally if it were me.

I'm with Quartz and BigT, I wouldn't have my name on the paid line due to legal responsibility around what goes over the line from all parties.

Is this just a standard UK based VDSL connection? You talk about upgrading to 100Mbit which doesn't really fit the UK, but then mention you're using a BT router.

For someone who works with networks you provide very scant information.

I believe if you are in a FTTP On Demand enabled area (most aren't) one of the suppliers does a 100/100 offering on the 330/30 package with a 3 year contract not 100% on that though - most people are talking like £4000 upfront fees and £100s a month.

I'm making an assumption that as he's talking 100megabit it's FTTP and Infinity 3?

Is that actually available to consumers directly though? we've just had FTTP On Demand (330/30) enabled here (fully) but its impossible to order other than through 3rd party business suppliers at incredible cost.
