Is there any point in buying a 4K TV?

I think quantum dot technology will be the next thing.

My first hddvd and Blu-ray players cost a fair amount and there was sod all content for a while. Didn't last long tho. Now Blu-ray players are cheap as chips and there's all the content you could want. I suspect the same this time round. And few of us here are in the 50% you mention and I couldn't give a monkeys what's available on general tv as it makes for around 5% of my viewing. Classic and new movies will be arriving in 4k, as will popular tv shows. Content will be there to buy on disk and available to download. As always, things will be driven by enthusiasts - but there's quite a lot of us spread over the world. I will be watching 4k (or above) content on the biggest screen I can afford and it will slay 1080p - which tbh already looks like dvd once you start going large. That's the other thing worth looking forward too - monster size panels and pjs dropping in price.

I only watch F1 on freeview. That's it. I buy Blu Ray discs every week.

it just has purer blacks, which is not the be all and end all

Just want to say, given the effort TV manufacturers have gone to, to ensure they can promote market leading contrast ratios, I'd say that that's a pretty god damn big deal.

LCD/LED makers tried to catch up with the Panasonic plasma, but couldn't, and even with the super local dimming in the new HDR LED sets will not compare with true blacks.

We're still waiting on a display that beats HD CRT!

give over.

they were hardly brilliant. took up half your room and multiple bugs/issues. also took 5000 people to move it around.

the only tv's which have stood the test of time in the HD world are pioneer kuro's and top end panny plasmas. both of which also were far from perfect but the best you could get really for 10+ years.

back then internet speeds were crap and there was no digital media or streaming as such.

both of those are killing physical media. just look at the high streets. gone are the days you saw virgin/hmv/blockbuster/global video, etc.

physical media is dying. it doesn't matter that it's superior the masses prefer streaming.

yes but LG are not the best manufactures to buy an OLED from, LG have never produced great TVs and it shows.
their Plasmas were rubbish compared to Pannys and their LEDs are the same... the Panny OLED is too expensive, but it's deffo better than the LG for their first attempt, according to the reviews

history is repeating itself.

but saying this, i saw nothing better than last Febuary, the SUHD and OLED looked exactly the same to me as back in early 2015....... so the tech isn't advancing that much, it's all hype............... they even had the same 4K Demos

You are aware that Panasonic has an LG panel in it, right?

From the perspective of Panasonic doing things right and well, I agree, the technology is superior to that of LG, but to say you can't see the difference between OLED and SUHD well, every one has different eyes, so... well yes...

While we're arguing the toss ... I agree about the hassle to maintain, the weight and the footprint. You're wrong about the Kuro tho. Great for a plasma - especially for the time - and a excellent panel all round, but in terms black levels, motion, and all over picture quality, it was comfortably beaten by a good hd crt. It's a shame they never really took off over here. Although given the weight it's understandable. I had a Sony and a JVC. Monitor wise I had a FW900 (16:9 24") and it's still arguably the best a monitor has looked. Again, if we're being completely objective, it slayed a Kuro in terms of PQ. This is partly why I never jumped on the plasma band wagon. They were great when compared to lcds, but compared to the crts I refused to let die the only benefit was screen size (a big plus) and footprint/weight. The image never got close though and never looked as 3D. The only flat panel I've seen that does is an oled, and still motion isn't great and the input lag sucks. So yeah - give me a panel with the motion, contrast and zero input lag of a CRT, but with the size, weight and footprint of a flat screen, and we'll have the best of all worlds.

I think you're arguing a point I didn't make, all while ignoring the points I did. Either way I don't fully agree and think discs will be with us for a little while longer before things seesaw fully to digital.

same panel but a far superior tech driving it, and this makes all the difference.

LG are considered so bad at this showroom that their tvs are displayed out of the way...around the corner, their OLEDs only look good because they have no REAL competition yet...........FACT.

Got my new LG oled today and I'm suitably impressed. So I have no idea what all the LG hate in this thread is about. The LG55EC930V is an excellent TV, no doubt about it.

Brand blindness, and assumption is what makes your views to me, seem somewhat biased and watered down.

You've gone from "PQ on the LG is no better than the other two tvs, it just has purer blacks, which is not the be all and end all "

to

"their OLEDs only look good because they have no REAL competition yet...........FACT"

As for the shop you were in, if they chose to keep them out of the way, that only reinforces that in order to sell other TV's with higher margins they need to separate them. You have chosen to dismiss LG, because you have a fixed opinion, and that's up to you.

I know you'll never say, but I'd love to know which irresponsible shop this is, not offering their prospective customers a true side-by-side to prove it is no better, as you say.

I just don't understand people with brand loyalty. I always buy the best item I can for the price I'm prepared to pay. Don't care who makes it.

same but i wouldn't touch an unknown brand or a brand which is now gone downhill.

for instance anything by sony, panasonic, samsung and lg is fine.

sharp, hi-sense, jvc, polaroid, etc not IMO.

last tv purchases have been like this panasonic, samsung, panasonic, samsung.

the next most likely will be a sony.

well i was wrong, TOTALLY WRONG, i went into currys today to buy Mum a new fridge :D

i took a look at the TVs, they were all set up correctly and the LG 55'' Flat 4K OLED was utterly stunning on a 4k USB demo.........easily the best image in the whole place

my Panny plasma is good, but the LG is miles more realistic and far better than the SUHD as well.

so it looks like an OLED definitely and either the LG 65'' or the Panny, the LG OLEDs weren't that expensive either, even the 65'' looked a good price.

the crap shop i went into a few weeks ago was Purwells ;)

Some people are a bit guilty of brand snobbery :p

Nothing wrong with LG at all. OK, in the past I have spent a bit more and bought a Sony but LG's oleds are superb.

Very happy with mine.
