Is there anything drastically better than a TRU?

My 2500k seems a little toasty when clocked at 4.5ghz at the required 1.33v and was wondering if there was an air cooler markedly better than my trusty old TRU (non extreme). Would something like the silver arrow or noctua be a big improvement? In the meantime i've dropped the vcore to 1.28v and the clockspeed down to 4.3ghz.

I don't know about drastic improvement (provided the TRU is running P/P) but the SA, NH-D14 and Phanteks would be an improvement overall, just remember all the high end air coolers are pretty tall (+160mm) so check case clearance first.

Ram clearance is another issue with the likes of the SA, NH-D14, especially with ram that has tall heatspreaders.

i dont think the coolers you mentioned are drastically better, maybe 2-5.C lower,
the true is still a very capable cooler.
when was the last time you cleaned it? as dust build up in the cooler/fans can increase heat.
it might be easier to just lap the true, this will help as well.

where is Helios when you need him? ;)

@setter, wasn't it you who went from a lapped true to a phantek? (sorry, i cant remember the exact cooler) and there was very little difference, but i may be wrong. :)
the next step would be a custom water loop.

Lapped TRUE to prolimatech supermega mate. Was a case of money burning hole in pocket tbh.:D

No dust build up as it got a good clean when fitting it to my new 2500k. The case has good airflow and the TRU is mounted correctly. At 4.3ghz its hitting about 72c during intel burn test at maximum.

I am currently running at 4.8 thanks to 8 case fans especially the 80 mm Sharkoon pulling air away from the back plate and the Noctua’s NH-D14.

The non-extreme might be limited by the fact that it only had 4 heat pipes rather than 6. As such, higher end coolers will prove beneficial to reducing your temps. Seeing as you have Vengence modules, I'd go with something like the Thermalright Venomous X. Of all the single tower coolers, it is easily the most efficient and not any worse than dual tower coolers really.

They are low profile vengeance modules though. Is the silver arrow any taller than the TRU do you know? Im wondering whether the lack of extra heatpipes of the extreme version is the issue.

Ahh ok, if they are the low profile ones, then you can get the SA. The SA is meant to be 160mm, same as the TRU but some people have found theirs to be slightly taller. My one was 160mm. How much clearance do you have left to the side panel with your TRU installed?

There probably isn't much more than 10mm between the top of the heatpipe and the side panel of my TJ09. But i'd guess the Silver Arrow will fit if it is a similar size to the TRU.

Try running IBT at Max Stress Level, see what temps that gives you :D

Average max 78 degrees, good enough for a 24/7 overclock, but maybe not in the summer.

I believe Noctua have a compatibility chart up on their web site stating what memory will and wont fit :)

According to Noctua, the NH-D14 offers sufficient clearance for all standard size memory modules, but you won’t be able to use memory modules higher than 44mm.
