Water from the tap up here is fine, tastes identical to any bottled water I've ever had. The water we have up north is hard water, when i go and stay at my aunties down south and have a shower with their soft water it makes my hair feel weird.

lol, think you've got it the wrong way round, You generally get hard water in the South (Except South West) and soft in the North.

I much prefer the taste of hard water in Colchester to what we have up here in Lancaster.

<3 tap water, unless it's from the kitchen downstairs... there's something wrong with it :\

I use to drink tap water then we got a big american fridge 2 months ago has 2 filters on it, and makes ice aswell.

Cant drink the tap water now it tastes better from the fridge purified and with ice aswell :D

tap water in Crewe is disgusting, tastes like someone dropped a kipper into the pipeline and it got stuck there.

Stafford has much better water, cool its luuurvly.

It tastes vile here, but I got used to it. In anyway, Sainsbury's sell a 5l bottle for £.99 so if you want something slightly better than tap water get that.

is that really any diffrent?

I can't drink tap water at my house, it tastes foul and odd. I think that maybe because my mum made me and my sisters from an early age drink only boiled or filtered water.

Tap water is all I drink (soft drink wise anyway), tap water in Manchester is just fine, better than the water in wolverhampton, but i'd still rather drink that than out of the filter there. You would never catch me buying bottled water, why on earth would I do that, if i'm paying for a drink it may as well be a good one!

Always filtered for me.

Surely it depends on how hard or soft your water is? I think the softer the water is from the tap, the nicer it is to drink. But when I've had hard water from the tap it's tasted like petrol and crap mixed together.

^I'm sure the water is hard here in sheffield, that's why it doesn't taste so good, it also makes me itch when I have a shower.

In reply to the original post, this is a picture of an RO unit's first filter stage after only a month's use (it started off pure white):

Isn't it supposed to do that? Either as a healthy natural byproduct, or as a "look our device is cleaning your water as it changes colour! OMG!!!!111oneoneone"....?

Run one with destilled/deionised water for a month and then I'll eat my own words.
