thank you

You can get routers that have failover/failback features that can use a phone/mobile dongle for internet connectivity.

Really? To buy the hardware you need in order to use your phone around the house would probably set you back the equivalent of a years broadband contract.

Plusnet have a current offer with some cashback bringing the price down to £13.58, and that includes the line rental.

I just read your post again and saw that you mentioned mains, that would be a powerline adapter. What devices are being connected and are they through WiFi or ethernet?

I used a Netgear ex7000 extender for a couple of weeks - had my mobile phone sitting at the front of the house ( where I could recieve a 4g signal), with the extender in the next room with PC and server connected to the extender via ethernet.
[edit] I chose this as it had multiple ethernet ports and a good wifi signal, cost around £60. If I just needed the one ethernet port there are other models which have this and do not cost as much.

Hi there.

you can use Connectify for windows.

it allows you to share any connection over any other connection.
it turns your PC into a router.

i use it since my apartment only has wifi and we share it with other tenants so I used this so I could get wired connections to my devices and also to isolate myself from other users in the building.

so you could make a wifi hotspot on your mobile device and then share that over ethernet to a switch or another preferred device/s.

Pretty sure you can buy routers with ethernet ports that take SIM cards, which you could then connect to a powerline adapter. Obviously this would need you to take the SIM card out of your phone and insert into the router, so perhaps it would be better to buy a dedicated SIM for the router.

Screwfix sell a true wireless repeater (no LAN ports) and that might work for you. It’s 802.11gbn only (2.4GHz) and it’s a mains socket replacement, but it will boost any WLAN from any source and it’s less than £30.

I’ve not tried it, but if you buy it mail order you should be able to DSR it if it doesn’t work for you.

From the manual it looks like it can be configured from WPS on your existing WLAN router or from an app that connects to the extender over its own WLAN signal.

I don't know the answers, but what performance are you going to get (mbps) at what cost (equipment, having your phone out of action etc)?

As others have said, I'd have thought there'd be a broadband deal that would be cheaper in every way (eg initial outlay and monthly expenditure).
