However the Asus M4A785TD-V Evo has an 8+2 phase VRM with cooling meaning it should handle even 140W TDP Phenom II processors with no issues.
Also the motherboard has all solid capacitors too.
I would probably go with the new hard disk for now. I would then add another 2GB of identical memory at a later date.
The OP would also need a 64 bit OS to take advantage of 4GB of RAM too.
