Haven't a clue, it was what my supervisor at work told me.

Could you ask him about that please? Because I suspect he is misinterpreting the difference between what may be company policy/regarded as good practice with what the legal situation is. The cases I've named go back over 50 years so invitation to treat isn't a new phenomenon.
 
I agree with the above. No contract of sale is formed until both parties so agree, and up to that point there is no obligation upon the retailer to sell the item to you at the advertised price, or, indeed, at any other price.

There are probably some exceptions to this. The most likely case where the might be a case to answer is where deliberate misrepresentation can be proven - i.e. where the retailer deliberately set out to mislead the consumer about the product - and I suspect that could well include the price of the product. A consistent refusal to sell a product might also count.

PS - I'm currently standing on one leg. Far too many Nelsons in my postcount. :o
