Is this an Ecoboom?

Next door neighbour has I think.... an S-Max, it's a 2016 looks like a Fiesta on steroids I guess.

She's been complaining the engine warning light is intermittently coming on, and whilst mowing the front lawn I noticed the Ecoboost badge on the back.

I did a DVLA reg check and it says the engine is a 999cc petrol.

So is a 2016 Ford with 1ltr engine with an Ecoboost badge on one of these wet belt time bombs?

Are you sure it’s an S-Max? I’m pretty sure the smallest engine they had was still an EcoBoost but was the 1.5. Wikipedia backs that up too, although that’s of course not always solid. Or is it a C-Max?

Either way, being a 1 litre 2016 almost certainly means it’s the 3 cylinder EcoBoost.

Could be anything, without reading the codes it's just speculation (although it's a likely candidate)

Yes 2016 will be wet belt.

Ok cheers guys.

Yea hopefully the engine light is something not sinister, problem is she doesn't have a clue about cars.

Now gotta try and work out how to approach this with her....

Not an S-Max on that year with a 1.0

Smallest in the model range is 1.5 Ecoboost.

B-Max & C Max both came with 1.0 Ecoboost engines.

Intermitant EML is commonly the vac valve that controls the turbo. Isn't an overly expensive fix but needs to be read to diagnose.

And just for clarity - S-Max

But of an update on this.

The car has done 96k miles, and the engine warning light has gone from intermittent to now permanently on.

Next door neighbours are good friends so a bit tricky how to approach it, but the Mrs found various Facebook groups, so basically forwarded those saying have you seen this.

Anyway, turns out they were very grateful, she spoke to her Dad as well who at the first mention of wet belt said get rid of the car, so it wasn't just coming from us.

She bought the car at the start of COVID before used car prices went up, and we buy any car prices they are not actually going to loose too much money on it shifting it on.

So hopefully potential disaster avoided, which is good as they seem to be really unlucky with cars.

Anyway cheers guys.

Might be able to clear it before they inspect it. Sometimes it takes a while for it to reappear :D

If it's a red or flashing engine light though, it's close to dead.

Yup depends.

The Mrs asked if I could do it.

I don't have a particularly good Ford diagnostic tool.

If you can find what sensor it is, sometimes you can either manually close/open the circuit, or some aftermarket devices off eBay etc to fool them but meh, we got on with them, but I'm not that bothered, it's not really my responsibility, it's also a bit naughty.

I would have thought that if it was a wet belt issue, I.e. belt failure, the engine wouldn’t run.
It sounds like it does run just the light comes on, as I understand it, the wet belt issue is more of a service issue, the belt needs a specific type of oil, anything else will cause it to delaminate and fail. If the engine has been serviced by a ford dealership it should be ok, however at 96k it should be changed anyway.

The red light could be caused by any number of things.

If the wet belt fails it blocks the oil passageways as it starts to disintegrate. I'm not sure you'll even get a warning. The engine will get oil starved and that will be the end of it.

The strainer starts to block and the oil pressure light comes on usually at idle, sometime comes on during driving.

I'd it does stop and shut it down straight away.

sometimes the teeth just tear off the belt smashing the pistons and valves.

Even if the correct oil is used they still have a tendency to let go
