Is this drive faulty?

Hey all,

I bought a 500GB WD AAKS drive a couple of months ago, and I whenever I try to install it my computer crashes. I get as far as initializing the disc in disc management and then the system freezes and the disc disappears from the list and it takes 2 or 3 restarts to get the computer to recognise it again.

Sometimes the BIOS can see it and sometimes it can't; sometimes theres just a blank space in the BIOS it doesn't even say that there's no device plugged into the SATA port like the others do.

On very rare occasions I've gotten as formatting but that crashes the computer well and truly. It's also pretty damn loud and sounds like its seeking all the time its plugged in, when it obviously isn't.

I've tried putting a jumper on to lock the drive at SATA1 speeds as per the WD site and had no luck. I have the SATA II drivers for my mobo anyway, so I'm sure that wasn't the problem.

My mobo is a Gigabyte p35 DS3, but I've also tried the drive on an Asus p5n-e sli board and had exactly the same problems.

Anybody got any ideas? Is it RMA time?
