Is this image true of today's level design?

the annoying thing is map design is more like this :)

very complex map design but can only really go one way :)

Arma as well.

BF2? BC2?

arma is about as non linear as it can get. You could fall asleep traversing that level and completely miss any objective also

bf2 also non linear and bc2 I think also. I can remember in bad company going in completely the wrong direction though the game doesnt advance non linear you can wander wherever you like so I count that different

l4d I think is linear, its fairly rare they give an open space or many routes its mostly one path though its well done with some open options sometimes and same for half life that was well done though also linear I agree

Other open level type games would be TDU or PR careful what you wish though because most people get bored if they're not told to 'do a barrel roll' and given a virtual pat on the head aka achievement

TBH I don't mind for basic FPS as lon as multiplayer maps are decent. as long as RPGs don't end up like this.

Play an fps/rpg if you want this kind of thing.

my bad, arma2 is incredibly open on some of its missions (im a hard core arma2 player) I just rarely class arma in the same category as most games as its more a simulator, best played online with a unit :)

I still think for the most part that a combination of linear and open is best though :)
