Is this market research illegal?

Is this not already achieved by those sites that you can register your product with and they act as the middle man collecting details of people until it's available.

Then if it falls through nothing is charged?

You see loads of links to products like this on http://www.lifehacker.com/ but can't find one off hand.

Someone must know - there's like one "go to" site that people use for this... Anyone?

You come across as quite intelligent and I remember you came up with an idea that got you in front of the Dragons on Dragons Den.

Yet you think that you can harvest credit card details for an imaginary product and it wouldn't be illegal?

GTFO.

I really am amazed that you can still post this kind of crap in here when other people are Mod'ed out of here sharpish.

lolbritboy.

When I was selling my last product I went to a bike show thing to demonstrate it (Earl's court type affair) - paid 900 quid for a small area .. set up the product .. got a couple of people 'racing each other' on bikes .. you know the gig ...

I didnt' have any way of taking card information there but wanted to make sales to anyone that wanted one..

So when people gave me their credit cards to buy one I just told them I needed to take it round the back for 'processing'. Round the back I copied all the card info onto a pad of paper using a biro. the 'security' number .. everything I could take.

Then when I got home I typed all the info into my own internet pages, to take the money, after setting it so the page didn't need the address etc. to work. I also did this for people who phoned me with credit card numbers from my adverts as they 'didn't trust the internet'. Which was kinda ironic as I just typed it into the internet for them!! (And you still think I'm lying here :) ).

God knows if that was illegal or not. But I still did it. I'm painfully truthful on this site always even if I ask things I should know but honestly don't :)

Just bending the rules if you ask me .. and made me a few grand ... with no-one hurt ..

That's not cool.

Nope, sometimes in business you've got to do what it takes to survive I reckon ... :/

No complaints, no problems, everyone happy. So it's not toooooo bad... I got a few grand .. they got their products, no-one knew what was going on .. reckon this kind of thing happens every day.

Seriously dude, give up trying to become an entrepreneur and also a forum poster.

You make life difficult for yourself with the crap you come out with on here and are always going to get grief because of it, the entrepreneur part just isn't going to happen and you're more likely to find yourself in the nick rather than a millionaire at 30.

Even if it's legal it's still stupid. So you're going to make users go through the entire checkout process then at the end just say "lol sorry out of stock" after they've entered credit card details. If that happened to me I would suspect it was a site to facilitate fraud so would phone my bank immediately and certainly never return to your website.

Unless I invent a time machine I strongly suspect you're right ..

I could easily just write 'spec me a glass of water' threads on here .. but they're so dull reading them make my eyes bleed!!

It's a good idea minus any parts related to taking their details.

Better if you allow them to press "buy" and then take them to a screen saying enter your email to be kept up to date with development and maybe give them a voucher to give them a little discount on a future purchase or otherwise thanks for your interest (so optional whether they give you an email address or not.

Thought about this myself and I think it would work but it must be transparant. Good thing is by the time product is ready website will already have a nice SE ranking or better then a complete start.
