Unless I invent a time machine I strongly suspect you're right ..

I could easily just write 'spec me a glass of water' threads on here .. but they're so dull reading them make my eyes bleed!!

I'd rather read 100 of them than the lies you perpetuate in everything you post.

easy solution, advertise it on said site, when user clicks buy it tells them item is out of stock and to input their email address if they want to be told when it comes available again?

surely this gets you genuine interest, firstly they click buy, so they want one and you can then tell them (if they give you an e-mail addy its because they want to know) when you have said item in stock?

btw what is said item?

This is actually an interesting question Britboy.
You are completely right in saying, how do you separate the timewasters from the actual interested parties, who are willing to pay money for a product.

It's a good idea minus any parts related to taking their details.

Better if you allow them to press "buy" and then take them to a screen saying enter your email to be kept up to date with development and maybe give them a voucher to give them a little discount on a future purchase or otherwise thanks for your interest (so optional whether they give you an email address or not.

This is the best solution to your problem.

Don't bother taking their credit card details (due to obvious problems).

Also, don't worry about the people who are debasing you...they are clearly not thinking outside of the box and are merely internet bullies who like to call other people names from behind their keyboards. I assure that the name callers would never dare do it face to face.

I find it strange that playground bullying at school is frowned upon, yet the same is perfectly acceptable in this forum.

What's with all the britboy hate in here, this is an excellent idea and, and I would say some awesome problem solving skills.

As for the legality - you need a trade lawyer.

Not really, a passing knowledge of the Data Protection Act would suggest it breaches that (using information for purposes other than advertised) and it is probably fraud too. You could also get in to trouble with your credit card merchant.

It's a good idea, although as suggested, just make it so when they click the buy button, redirect it to an out of stock page, and then count how many unique visitors have viewed that page.

That way, you're not collecting their details, although I'm not sure whether this breaches false advertising laws?
