hey guys im a total noob when it comes to monitors and i was wondering if this monitor was any good? its the 23" LG IPS231P Widescreen IPS1 LED Monitor and its £155 (from a competitor so I cant link)

Hi there,

May I ask what you will be using the monitor for?

Looking at this (not particularly in-depth) review this LG looks like it uses a nice IPS panel (possibly the same as the Dell U2311H) one. However, it doesn't use RTC/overdrive (which the Dell U2311H does) so the response time isn't great.

Hence I wouldn't suggest this LG if you are mainly playing games (in which case I would suggest the Dell or the 120Hz TN panel LG w2363D). However, if you don't need a monitor to be that responsive (eg. CAD, photo editing) then this LG IPS looks like a nice bit of kit for the price.

yeah i am gaming on it mostly but over £200 is too much for me so what would you recommend me on a budget of £150?

To be honest, if you are mainly gaming I would either suggest finding an extra £15 and picking up either an LG W2363W (120Hz TN monitor) or a refurbished Dell 2209WA (E-IPS panel but great for gaming).

Yes, the LG works as a 3D monitor - so long as you are using an nvidia graphics card and the nvidia 3D vision kit.

As for the "refurbished dell 2209WA"- you will need to give it a google.

yeah i have a gtx 460 i know its probably not that good for 3D but is the LG any good as a normal monitor
I think I found the dell was it £160?

Yea, probably not ideal but it would allow you to give 3D a go and if you liked it you could add in a second card in SLI to bump the performance back up (assuming your mobo and PSU support SLI).

but is the LG any good as a normal monitor

Aye, it's very good. It's extremely responsive with good control of the overdrive and the 120Hz really helps make fast-moving games feel smooth. That said, compared to an E-IPS panel monitor the colours won't look as good and the viewing angles are much more restrictive. Here and here are reviews.

Aye, or thereabouts. Both the monitors I mentioned in post #4 are about that price. Personally I would go with the Dell, as the E-IPS panel is lovely and it works great with games - but the LG is still a very nice gaming monitor.

hmmm the DELL does seem nice but after going to the gadget show live last year ive always wanted to get into 3D so the LG does appeal to me too as yes I can go SLI hopefully my XFX 650w psu can cope :p both monitors would give me a good upgrade from my Samsung 2032BW as they're both 1920x1080

Ah, if you have your heart set on 3D then the LG is an excellent choice. You PSU will also happily handle dual GTX 460s, so with that graphics arrangement you should indeed have the raw power to play modern games smoothly in 3D.

Just to note: the Dell is actually 1680x1050 - so a slightly lower resolution that 1080p and the sam res as the samsung. However it still looks amazing - mainly due to the 8bit E-IPS panel and very impressive responsiveness for an IPS.

ok I just need to save up another £40 then (that's taking into account postage costs) to get the LG only thing is the 3D kit costs £100 hopefully if I do like it then I won't have to pay too much on getting another 460 :P also is 768mb enough vram for 1920x180? as even if I get a second card which is a 1gb one i'll only get 768mb

Yes, the 768MB VRAM is fine for gaming at 1920x1080.

I don't believe you can SLI a 768MB version with a 1GB version of the GTX 460 as they are quite different cards and have different numbers of stream processors. You will want to find another 768MB GTX 460, though you don't have to worry about the manufacturer (in terms of SLI compatibility).

Oh I didn't realise that they were so different but at least that means that I won't have to spend as much :p

Aye, just need to plug it in one of the HDMI ports. However, since the Xbox can't output at more that 60Hz (and the LG's HDMI ports also don't support it) then you won't get the 120Hz smoothness that you will see using the PC.
