Is this safe?

I had a similar sized slash in my tyre

I just replaced. My thinking was for the sake of £160 or whatever it was, why risk it?[/QUOTE]
Took me a while to spot that... surely its fine? It doesn't look a lot deeper then the actual tread lines

If the internet didn't exist, I'm not sure I'd even be able to get dressed in the morning, let alone make a decision like that :p

Another +1 for changing it. Rim protectors are there to protect the alloy from a scuff, not reinforce the tyre for added sidewall protection.

Wouldn't this mean he doesn't need to replace it?

You've had one trye expect say it doesn't need fixing, go and see another. 'Better safe than sorry' is usually only ever said by third parties.

The split is moving deeper into the tyre.

It might be fine.

Or you could blow out at 70mph on the motorway spinoff though a bus stop of full of children finally coming to rest on the bus stop of nuns whilst derailing a train.

To be fair the 70mph blow out isn't a a worse case scenario. The traffic is moving in the same direction and there's a barrier to prevent you meeting those going on the other way.

A 60mph blow out on a single carriageway would be worse as you would likely collect the 60 mph traffic in the opposite direction.

This assumes it may actually be possible to reach 60 mph on single carriageway due to the 40-50 mph brigade.

Sleep tightly.
