Hey guys,

I'm looking for a device I can have running all the time with my media streaming through Plex. Currently I've got to have my PC running in order to access it off other devices.

A friend showed me the ASUS EeeBox, seems to have a decent spec especially at the cost?

Only issue would be having large HDD's, I'm not too sure how I would go about using them as the internal drive only supports up to 500GB.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks

More details will help get the advice your after :)

Is this a machine to store your media library on, with a plan to make it available to other devices in the house (if so what devices are you streaming to?). If so this might not be beefy enough as a Plex Server (which may need to transcode videos on the fly). Will also depend on the type of media files, number of consecutive users (workload basically).

Yeah I'd be using this to access storage attached to the machine and be made available for other devices around the house. I'd be streaming to Apple TV, iPads etc.

Files are typically .mp4 and consecutive users wouldn't be mroe than 2/3 at any one time.

Very roughly speaking, for a single full-transcode of a video, the following PassMark scores are a good guideline for a requirement:

1080p/10Mbps: 2000 PassMark
720p/4Mbps: 1500 PassMark

The processor in the box original linked doesn't quite meet the single transcode passmark, so probably not up to the job. Maybe something with an i3 or better is a better bet. I built my home server around an i3, with lots of drives and run it all with FreeNAS, which has the plex server plugin like a the synology box suggested above. Maybe have a read about building a small pc or recycle some old kit?
