Hi,

I am planning to get 5 of the Hitachi Deskstar 4TB 7k4000 for my DX510 expansion unit to the DS1511+.

However my friend told me not to get them all at one time, or to get different brands, since if there is one bad batch, all of them can go at once. I can afford one of them going bad (RAID 5) but not more than one at a time!

So what should I do in this case?

Thanks

Take your chances, the likelihood is very slim or if your are really worried buy an extra one and keep it as a cold spare just encase it fails.

Its very unlikely for batches to fail, at my work be buy in and use over 200 HDDs a month 99% of them go into raid arrays from day one so most of the servers run with drives from the same batch we never get failures happen at the same time.

i would have thought without ever havin ordered bulk storage that the chances of getting a batch of faulty ones is pretty damn slim

Does this friend also buy food like this?, imagine how many boxes of frozen fish fingers he must destroy in the shop just in case the suppliers sent them a bad batch.

I suggest you bang his head on the other side to even out the damage, he might return back to normal. :)

Bad batch.. not had much of those really, bad model : 27 dead or dodgy 7200.11 1.5Tb out of 60 (that i know of, many others if not all are probably also suffering from very high reallocated sector issues etc..) speaks for itself, all supposedly 'fixed' CC1H firmware models LOL .

An entire batch to get through QC unnoticed is very low chance, honestly. If you're worried, buy more, or just road-test a few of them.
