I am everywhere...
I think we are moving away from living a simple life to a very complicated one at this day and age (or this part of the world anyway). There's pressure to suceed academically, buy a house, do well in life, raise kids and pay bills (all sorts) for the rest of one's life. In contrast to certain parts of the world,(Third world mostly) people tend to live a simple life.

Sometimes i feel we are trying too hard - kinda like survival of the fittest. I sometimes wanna take a break but i cant it feels like a race man, once your stop people will take over.....

I think we are being pressured too much either one way or the other to succed and do well in this country and at the same times we are moving away from a simple life to a complicated ones.

I dunno whether to ask you guys to disscuss or just voice your opinion on it. thanks.

Just take it one day at a time, and try to enjoy the challenges you face. We've all been been through it, or are about to go through it, so there's not much you can do apart from take it one step at a time and try to enjoy the ride.

Perhaps I am being painfully ignorant here but while many people in the third world live lives where they need very little education and generally do things that come naturally to them (for good or ill) and dont have their beliefs challenged on a frequent basis... their lives aren't particularly great

I think that's just thinking wishfully about some "simple life" that doesn't exist. Someone in the poorest countries of the world has to worry constantly about having enough food to feed them and their family, have any sort of place to live at all, raise kids (just like you), all without lots of the comforts you enjoy. It's not about the position you're in, it's about your attitude to it, plenty of people in every part of the world are very happy with who they are and what they're doing, and equally plenty of people in every part of the world aren't.

stuff what every one else is going, do your own thing :) i do

i made the choice years ago that theres more important things than money and i'm so much happier i gave up a 30k p/a job to be more family oriented and i dont regret it one bit :) i've got 2 great kids (sometimes) and a none too stressful 9-5 job(albeit with half the money)

but money isnt everything especially if you work yourself into the ground

Having said that MrRazur - perhaps your problem is that you just dont balance your life enough. I work full time and I plan to go back into higher education next year, but I don't feel that life is becoming too complex because I do lots of physcial and more natural activities such as 'adventure sports' type-activities such as climbing...

It's called GREED; Most people who are in that rut or lifestyle are there because they want more material things.
As sormicroft says, be content with less and you will generally be much happier; you will also not have the stress of competing, which may mean that you live longer too.

Exactley

Even if you win the rat race. Your still a rat

I agree that we live in an almost 24 hour society or cycle of rush to get up, que to get to work, que to go shopping, que to go home. Were told by the media what to look like, where to live, what to eat what we should aspire to.

Sometimes you have to take a step back and think is this what you really want. Start putting a value on the things in life rather than what other people tell you are important.

One day a fisherman was lying on a beautiful beach, with his fishing pole propped up in the sand and his solitary line cast out into the sparkling blue surf. He was enjoying the warmth of the afternoon sun and the prospect of catching a fish.

About that time, a businessman came walking down the beach, trying to relieve some of the stress of his workday. He noticed the fisherman sitting on the beach and decided to find out why this fisherman was fishing instead of working harder to make a living for himself and his family.

"You aren't going to catch many fish that way," said the businessman to the fisherman, "you should be working rather than lying on the beach!"
The fisherman looked up at the businessman, smiled and replied, "And what will my reward be?"

"Well, you can get bigger nets and catch more fish!" was the businessman's answer.
"And then what will my reward be?" asked the fisherman, still smiling.

The businessman replied, "You will make money and you'll be able to buy a boat, which will then result in larger catches of fish!"
"And then what will my reward be?" asked the fisherman again.

The businessman was beginning to get a little irritated with the fisherman's questions. "You can buy a bigger boat, and hire some people to work for you!" he said.
"And then what will my reward be?" repeated the fisherman.

The businessman was getting angry. "Don't you understand? You can build up a fleet of fishing boats, sail all over the world, and let all your employees catch fish for you!"
Once again the fisherman asked, "And then what will my reward be?"

The businessman was red with rage and shouted at the fisherman, "Don't you understand that you can become so rich that you will never have to work for your living again! You can spend all the rest of your days sitting on this beach, looking at the sunset. You won't have a care in the world!"

The fisherman, still smiling, looked up and said, "And what do you think I'm doing right now?"

The problem with that, Evil-penguin, is that if you don't work in the UK, you don't live. Simple as.

Because we live in a money-orientated culture, you need to work to survive. Unless, of course, you actually enjoy the dole queue or enjoy living rough on the streets.

If you go to the fringes of the first world, you will find a good mix between the necessities of modern life, and the good life that you so crave :)

We may have to work, but how much we work depends on how much we WANT. Note I said want and not need. Some people get caught in the trap. I do my best not to :)

In regars to your first post, see what Evil penguin quoted :)

You know i dont know what "balance" is anymore, I go to Uni, Work and try to fit in many activities like most of us. On top of all of that you have people back home looking up to you ( i dont expect you to understand this part) for something you will do for them etc.

Sometimes i pause and wonder what is it all about? When you turn on your tv only to see "cribs" being shown and i kinda feel like i havent acheived enough, i feel like if he can do that why cant i etc but then i think this way- we cant all be rich etc. Which ever way i look at it, i think there's still pressure on us man and striking the balance seems to get harder year in year out.

I look at things that way too but due to human unlimited need, one have to carry on working and pressure get more and more.....

But only up to a limit. I know that we all need to survive and we need a home and car etc. But then you can limit yourself. Why struggle to run a £20K car when a £10K car will do? Do you really need a second family car? Do you need expensive clothes, watches and jewellery?

I agree that we need to work to buy stuff. But how much you get caught up in the "I don't need it but I WANT it" race is up to you.

Yeah Desmo i once again agree but what i think is my weak point is knowing my limits. I came here 1999 and back then i hang around with all these Nigerian fraudsters, after a while i decided that's not what i want as my conscience cant bear the thought of frauding people. So i joined the race like everyone else - earn a honest living by working.

Over the years, all these fraudulent guys have managed to have plenty of assets etc. A very good example will be a Mr S, i know personally and anyone in the Nigerian community (in SE London) will know too. He has never worked before and you wont believe it, he drives a bently, Hummer etc and a big house. When i see that, i even feel more pressured deep down acheived something like that if not better but through the legal way.

I think i might have come off the thread now but hopefully you can see what im trying to say.
