Is TN hard to stomach?

Coming from IPS to TN, is it hard to get used to? What would I miss out on and what would I gain?

I would like to stick with IPS but choices are quite limited with what I'd want from a monitor so considering TN.

TN has poorer blacks, colour depth and limited viewing angles in general. The benefit is higher response times.

This is in general, I understand TN panels are steadily improving.

I recently switched ffrom VA to TN gsync swift. What i find a bit off putting is the colour shift from top to bottom depending on where you tilt your head. Viewing angles are worse too, not an issue if sitting straight in front of the monitor tbh.

Hmm, you're not selling it lol.

Are they gaming biased? I mean are they perhaps less of a wise choice if it's more of an all round monitor I'm after, rather than a specific gaming focussed requirement?

I'd only go TN if it was for FPS gaming. If you're doing photo work or general office work more then IPS all the way.

I do a fair bit of gaming alongside photo work and I moved from a 144hz TN panel to an IPS panel and much prefer the colour depth/viewing angles over the high response time.

Im primarily a gamer so the move to a 144Hz gsync panel suits me ok. The fast response times off TN panels do indeed render them more suitable for gaming. I certainly wouldnt reccomend them for any type of serious image work.

Just swapped back from IPS to TN for better fps gaming

Whilst gaming, you won't notice hardly any difference imho. The screen is much brighter than my last and thats the biggest difference (thats disadvantageous) ive noticed in terms of quality when gaming. Of course this is purely down to the brightness setting used (i dont like screens too bright), so i turned it down abit but it very quickly started looking very dull colour wise, so ive left it a little brighter and i'm sure i'll soon get used to it.

For general desktop, pictures and usage, the colour shift from top to bottom is REALLY noticable to me so unless your sitting at the perfect height and bang on you will notice. More so when you adjust position in your seat or decide to recline or 'sink' or 'slouch' into your seat, the difference is noticeable. Viewing angles not great but i only look head on so doesnt bother me. Colour production obviously never going to be as good as IPS but i was pleasantly surprised that it was nowhere near as bad as the impression you get when people talk about it. I could easily live with it and be happy with how images and videos etc look colour wise. If your a perfectionist and know what it should really look like however, it will probably bug you. This is all imho and user experience.

I'll be quite happy to live with it for now until 4k high hz IPS panels surface. if your not bothered about 4k get a 120hz+ IPS screen.

What features do you want from a monitor?

It's not set in stone but seeing as I seem to stick with last gen top end cards for gaming rather than having the latest and greatest I was thinking g-sync would be really useful. I was thinking of maybe going to a 980ti when Pascal is fully released, you get the idea.

I was also considering jumping from 1200p to 1440p, so I had in mind originally 27" 1440p g-sync IPS but obviously that option is very limited.

I game almost exclusively with v-sync on because I seem really sensitive to the slightest of screen tearing.

I couldn't go back to TN. I'll admit that a TN panel I bought for my gf is actually pretty decent for colour reproduction so they've come a long way, but it's the lack of contrast that gets me. I have an acer panel that's about 5 years old (was £250 at the time) and it's shockingly bad for contrast compared to my similarly aged Dell IPS which looks miles better than the new TN panel I bought in dark images and scenes.

It's a shame as the monitors that tick all my boxes now are all over £600!

Can't you get higher hz IPS panels now? or are they coming out soon....

I'd spent most of my gaming life on TN panel, nothing wrong with them I thought, till I recently upgraded to a IPS, massive game changer imo would never go back now, my only regret is I never tried them sooner.

Depends on your main use, I've had IPS and TN, currently on a TN with the ROG Swift and yes it's not as good as my old IPS but for gaming and gsync I was willing to take the hit on colours.

Don't get me wrong the ROG has very nice colours for a TN panel.

Original TN rog swift owner here. I was incredibly reluctant when I bought it having been IPS for years, and to be honest I was expecting to send it back.

Still got it, some 10 months later as its great!

The biggest problem / flaw with TN is the vertical colour shift but in the whole scheme of things it's not really a problem when gaming at all.

The colour reproduction on the swift and some other recent TN panels is also very very good. And significantly I would also say that the blacks are as good if not better than IPS, especially as TN doesn't suffer from IPS 'glow' (glow, not backlight bleed which is very different).

Having said all that I would love to try an Ips version of the rog which you can now (or v soon) get. No way I'd go back to 60hz gaming.
