Is trolling illegal?

I am struggling to see the problem with this, threatening to rape someone or murder someone doesn't really fall under "friendly banter". Banter here being used in the modern sense i.e. "Being an offensive idiot".

If you're threatening someone, that's not trolling, that's threatening, abuse, bullying, etc. Trolling isn't sinister like those - just daft. It's just a lazy label media use to make a story. But this has already been mentioned.

trolling is when you do something like post a ridiculous statement on a forum.
sit back and watch the forum burn whilst adding more wood to the fire to stoke the arguments.

the daily mail does trolling rather well too

'Banter' is now up there with claiming 'I'm entitled to my opinion' when challenged about saying something stupid. A shame, since banter used to a good short-hand for pointless, amusing conversations, but now means anything vile said by a lad (in the modern sense of a complete ****).

I wouldn't say she's been trolled, these people have made death threats. I think you will find there's a slight difference between the two ;)

Isn't she the one who campaigned for a woman on a British bank note ?

I think it is an interesting question. Trolling has existed online for decades so I can't see how things have changed ..

The media now uses the word so it's shoved in everyone's faces.

There are 2 types of internet trolls:

The old type, web 1.0 - they post on boards like here, usually controversial or silly topics. Or it could be an irrelevant response to a post e.g. ASCII art. They do it just to annoy the regular posters and mods, not to be taken personally. After a few repeat offences, they usually get banned from the board.

The new type, web 2.0 - they post in the comments section of deviantART, Facebook, Myspace etc of user pages. It's normally an attack on that user, so it is taken personally. They are difficult to ban because they have to be reported multiple times, before they are known to the mods. This is definitely the case with deviantART.

As for the OP, if it was death threats, then yes that's illegal. It would be the same if the death threat came by email, voicemail, phone call, SMS or good old fashioned letter.

If it's a flame war, personal insults, swearing, posting inappropriate pics, then I think that should be a matter for the mods, not the police.

Caroline Criado-Perez has suffered life-changing psychological effects from the abuse which she received on Twitter," she told the court.

Hahahahahaahahahahahahahahahaha
Grow a back bone you pathetic woman

She was on the radio earlier. Absolutely vapid woman, her description of what had happened to her kept on going in circles, and she claimed to have 'given up' twitter etc. before admitting that she hadn't been off it for much more than a month.

Not particularly appropriate comments to make, but at the same time there's no way in heck this should ever have got to a criminal trial. Basically, it's only because of the high-profile nature of the campaign (Banknotes), and the fact that this hit the papers in quite a major way that it ever got this far IMHO....

Weev has never been sentenced for trolling. He's currently serving a sentence for the AT&T hack though.
