Is trolling illegal?

The media now uses the word so it's shoved in everyone's faces.

Didn't they have to rename the pencil toy with the neon hair?

There are 2 types of internet trolls:

The old type, web 1.0 - they post on boards like here, usually controversial or silly topics. Or it could be an irrelevant response to a post e.g. ASCII art. They do it just to annoy the regular posters and mods, not to be taken personally. After a few repeat offences, they usually get banned from the board.

The new type, web 2.0 - they post in the comments section of deviantART, Facebook, Myspace etc of user pages. It's normally an attack on that user, so it is taken personally. They are difficult to ban because they have to be reported multiple times, before they are known to the mods. This is definitely the case with deviantART.

As for the OP, if it was death threats, then yes that's illegal. It would be the same if the death threat came by email, voicemail, phone call, SMS or good old fashioned letter.

If it's a flame war, personal insults, swearing, posting inappropriate pics, then I think that should be a matter for the mods, not the police.

I've seen the other, twisting it calling others trolls because they don't like a person winning in a discussion or getting their own way. The posse chimes in. Every forum, news articles, site articles have them.

Hahahahahaahahahahahahahahahaha
Grow a back bone you pathetic woman

The trouble is, we don't ignore these types, we give them as much publicity as they want.

In fact, in general, we give airtime to entirely the wrong people these days.

It started with C4's experiment 'Big Brother'. Now it's everywhere. Trash TV.

Gather the the most obnoxious brain-dead people you can find and shove a camera in their face.

Not even the news is immune. Flashing up tweets from the public, or 'interviewing' a random member of the public, who has (mostly) *no insight whatsoever* about the subject in hand.

I wonder if we're all just getting stupider.

FoxEye, you know why, right?

Appealing to the lowest common denominator? Or just programmes designed to make the average Joe feel good about him/herself?

No I have no idea. Maybe our standards are slipping. You watch old black and white footage from years gone by and I don't think they had all this awful trash TV.

Both. Each bit plays a big part.

It costs too much to make quality programmes. Thats why it's full of gameshows and reality TV/soaps.

Standards? We lost that a long time ago. Anything goes now.

The media know how to play the public. Look at it closely. It's all done for viewing figures. Watch anything that makes it to the news. Whether it's a reality TV show of any form or something from the internet. They know how to get the public into a turmoil to buy papers from gossip or anything controversial/trivial. Hear it on the radio, internet, they are tuning in. Such outrage no matter how small or big it is. Viewing figures are up, more ad revenue.

In someways it's like a setup and effectively the media are trolling and stalking. Get something controversial up on the news stations, radio or the masses daily dosage of daytime TV. They know how to get the public all rilled up and take to social media to hammer the keyboards. These journalists spend their time hunting down stuff across social media and the internet to anger people but it's very subtle. It works everytime. Then it's become news.

Only, a lot of people can't seem to work things out. They never think twice about what they should say, or if they should say it. Only the decent people won't speak out because they'll be targeted. That and the fact they just get on with their quiet lives. The loud masses make the news.

It's like leaving a trail of cheese. It works everytime. Everytime. Yet the lemmings never wisen up.

That and the fact so many people have crummy lives or live through others crummy lives thats why we have newsagents shelf to shelf, floor to ceiling, full of gossip magazines and anything trivial.

So many in this country like to see others fail or become as bad as they are.

When do you ever hear about really good successful stuff? Really worthwhile stories and people… There's a lot out there but the ignorant run the show and make the news. The scum floats to the top.

The latest thing tonight on Sky News (as they get obsessed and all giddy over such small things) before midnight, they were talking about photos of Catherine Middleton's mother walking with shopping judging her by what she's wearing and criticising her for her age. Thats effectively trolling to get a reaction from the public and it becomes a news story from it. They don't report news. They make it.

The news used to be somewhat decent. You take what you want out of it. It's so sad what it's become. Sky News was reporting a few months ago people drawing happy faces into their cappuccinos. What a sad nation we have become. Yet this is news.

Tweet in your stories, send in your photos, tell us where you are! You do the reporting for us. Dance for us and they do it. But photos must be in landscape!

A lot of members confuse conflicting opinion with trolling. An opinion is a personal view and doesn't have to factual or accurate but this is always going to be subjective.

A troll by my definition, is someone who deliberately and continually attempts to upset the balance of a discussion and bait others into trouble. IMO, it's a form of bullying.

The media does this all the time to get a response. The keyboard warriors hammer in their views and so it goes on. Then when the media don't like the response, the subject is quickly changed and forgotten about. Onto stir up the next topic. Rinse and repeat.
