IS VISTA up to scratch yet for games?

Rebuilt my XP Pro to a Vista 64 machine just over a week ago, carried out a full format and rebuild. Apart from getting used to Vista and the annoyance of the User Authentication I've had no problems with it. All games run fine and stable. Not had one crash from the machine.

I would recommend though if you do install it you disable the User authenication protection(can't remember it's actual name), as that will bug the hell out of you asking for permissions every time you try to install or run anything.

As for the rebuild, Vista installed in about 20 mins and got Office 2007 on about 10 mins after that. Was up and running with Web and Email after about 40 mins as it auto detected everything else. As for other software I'm installing it as needed. The biggest pain for me was FSX and all my add ons that took arounf 7 hours to install, but that was down to one product for real scenery rather than Vista as it's got a rubbish installer.

I think if you've got up to date hardware and software then you shouldn't have to many issues with Vista. Though using True Image (or something similar) to back up your XP install would seem the sensible approach prior to the rebuild just in case it doesn't go well. I know I did, but haven't had to restore yet.

All my games run perfectly (except generals:(), and find it much more stable than xp was. Only time I ever get a bsod is when I o/clock too far:D

Well we can all only call on our personal experiances. I switched to Vista 32 and at first it was great, the longer it was on the worst it would get.
Game stability was virtualy non-existent pretty much every game I had would at some point crash or just not work at all, no dought it was something I did or a bad driver but end of the day I just went back to XP.

XP = Everything works pretty much 100% of the time can't realy go wrong.
Vista = Eventerly pretty much nothing would work, from games crashing every 5 minutes or even the most basic things like the sidebar crashing for no reason.

This is just my experiance, I know a lot of people have no issues at all and will gladly reccomend Vista to all, I'm just not one of those people (yet).

Best thing you can do is just give it a try and see what you think, nothing to loose apart from the hastle of a re-install. If you have acronis and a nice big spare HD just backup your XP installation then if vista goes **** up you can be back on XP in minutes, like you never left it.

Oh and google your games + vista so you will have a heads up of any potential issues.

Its been pretty much a perfect switch for me here, at first the nvidia (and ati) drivers where a bit poor. However they have fixed these problems in the last few months. Added to the performance hotfixes which came out a month or so ago and everything is running great. Games wise its just the same as XP and for everything else Vista is just simply a lot better than XP.

Latest reviews show Vista is on a par with XP in terms of game performance. There is no getting round the fact that DirectX 10 means we're all going to have to move to Vista, so may aswell just bite the bullet.

Vista x64 from the day before official release (thanks Overclockers!) and absolutely no problems except for ATi drivers which made me buy a 8800GTS anyway. World of Warcraft, Team Fortress 2, all the latest games run without issues. Just make sure you keep everything up to date! Keep on top of things. With XP it's ok to be a little behind on drivers but Vista is still fairly new, and many software developers are still getting up to scratch with the OS.

I dont think anyone can say that Vista64 isnt better then XP.

But........

the abysmal lack of adequate driver support is a complete joke. Almost none of my hardware will work in 64bit. Until MS get rid of this moronic driver signing im staying with XP thanks. I dont get it Vista 64 is aimed at the more enthusiast hardcore user but they persist with the notion that all pc users are idiots and cant work out what drivers to use.

when i first ran vista x64 it was abit of a dog, driver problems mainly but ive kept with it and now its working very nicely if there is a performance hit with vista i cant see it.

i dont think i could go back to xp, vista looks very nice :)

It depends what type of vista you use no_1_dave. vista home for example microsoft quotes as using the least system resources, opposed to Vista Ultimate which is quoted to use the most system resources.

what? the vista versions (bar basic) are pretty much identical. You don't need more resources to run ultimate.

Major improvements since then begining of the summer. And I mean major.

I've kept a dual boot just in case, but I've slowly moved all my games back to Vista64. There's virtually no difference anymore - a serious benckmarker might see a handfull of frames here and there, but it's a moot point now. Vista will take the crown before long.

It still takes too long to expand/copy large files tho. And the whole UAC thing needs to be thought about.

If you have to get a new OS, then yes, Vista. If you don't have to than there's still no rush.

Vista 64 Home Premium here. No problems at all so far.

Doom3, HL2, CS:S, FEAR all tried and tested if it's any help :)

Vista has nothing over XP except more instability and feature you wont use after two days, it s a bloated system hog, stick with XP.

What on earth are you talking about?

How can Vista be more unstable?

I can understand some programs not working due to the compatibility issues but other than that, if your getting crashes, BSODs etc.. then thats down to you not the O/S.
