Rebuilt my XP Pro to a Vista 64 machine just over a week ago, carried out a full format and rebuild. Apart from getting used to Vista and the annoyance of the User Authentication I've had no problems with it. All games run fine and stable. Not had one crash from the machine.
I would recommend though if you do install it you disable the User authenication protection(can't remember it's actual name), as that will bug the hell out of you asking for permissions every time you try to install or run anything.
As for the rebuild, Vista installed in about 20 mins and got Office 2007 on about 10 mins after that. Was up and running with Web and Email after about 40 mins as it auto detected everything else. As for other software I'm installing it as needed. The biggest pain for me was FSX and all my add ons that took arounf 7 hours to install, but that was down to one product for real scenery rather than Vista as it's got a rubbish installer.
I think if you've got up to date hardware and software then you shouldn't have to many issues with Vista. Though using True Image (or something similar) to back up your XP install would seem the sensible approach prior to the rebuild just in case it doesn't go well. I know I did, but haven't had to restore yet.
