ISIL, ISIS, Daesh discussion thread.

I'm no expert but could someone tell me what the logic of Assad would be in using the chemical weapons at this stage? It just doesn't make sense to me so far.

because he's got away from using it several times before without much recrimination (and lets be honest he isnt holidaying abroad anytime soon to be arrested on war crimes). Sure everyone shouts about it but its quickly forgotten - meantime on the ground the threat of it occuring again sticks with the population - kind of a scare tactic I guess

This time the US called him out on it

He might be on the front foot at the moment but the war is far from over and his forces even with Russian backing are relatively fragile. Combined with a number of recent rebel pushes on territory around Damascus so he'd probably want to try and deter that as well.

I'm glad there was some sort of comeback after this event - anyone know how many cruise missiles are in the area? I assume this could be repeated a number of times if further chemical attacks occur?

you won't be glad though when those so called rebels that take over are ISIS nutjobs. The west needs to keep its prying noses out. if Asad wants to Sarin his country into the stoenage that's his business, and the wests medeling will simply further strengthen the ISIS hand in the area. Asad isn't the one inspiring nutcases to drive cars into people in Europe, it's ISIS, I say we stay out as should the US and leave Putin and his warlord mates to gas the population in peace.

And you would be happy to sit idly by and let any nut job dictator dish out mass murder because it none of our business - er OK then that makes sense

Why can't we deal with Assad and ISIS? - assuming Assad is responsible for recent supposed chemical weapon events. We as a species should never let things like maltreatment of another countries citizens go on unchallenged or it just encourages any and all dictators.

The mind boggles!!

you think anyone in the west is doing this for anything to do with maltreatment of citizens. lol you are priceless. The wes tput most of those dictators in place or propped them up and sat quiet while it served their own interests. This is pure comedy gold on here

You obviously just skipped over the dozens of cynical posts I've made in here over the months this thread has been active :s

You mean he backed down and did something else - the above was a compromise after he backed down - the US filed a resolution at the UN and then Russian negotiated the above, the 'Red line' was crossed and the US didn't take unilateral action. And as we've seen they've not been destroyed. Re-read my post - I said maybe Obama should have done 'something like this'... not 'something'.

Well the reality is he shouldn't necessarily have said what he said initially. Most people knew that going into Syria would have been a cluster **** and we should be doing everything we should to stay out of it. That was the best compromise at the time, which is perhaps a positive for Obama in not pushing for full scale intervention - unlike Cameron.

If we had gone in very little would be different to now, still hundreds of thousands dead, still a fight between three/four factions, still a broken country and still terrorism rife, the only difference being there would have been thousands of US/UK soldiers dead as well, and we would have had to make the decision of spending another decade fighting in a country that has collapsed or just leaving it to it's fate like Libya, after we "liberated" it.

I still think we took the best option at the time, and I doubt things would have been that much better. Look at Libya for example, split in two, with an internationally recognised "government" that can't control a teapot, and another "government" that also lays claim to the country, all surrounded by terrorist groups now given free reign in most of the country and countries surrounding it (such as Mali - the French did a good job there, helping a sitting government deal with a rebel incursion, not dismantling a country and leaving it to go **** itself, which is what we did to Libya and to an extent Iraq).

Out of all the wars to get involved in THIS was the most deserving and we did absolutely nothing. Its seemingly increasingly likely to we will end up at war with Syria and I wouldnt be surprised if DT has regular troops on the ground there within a year, since there is already several marine Battalions there helping out the Iraqi forces it shouldn't exactly be difficult to pass through. I also wouldnt be surprised to see Russia flip on the issue, if the US gives them enough benefits.

As for ISIS, The Iraqi army are sorting them out , the YPG are of course helping and made amazing ground a few years back but them getting battered by Turkey (bc **** Turkey) isn't exactly helping as they can seriously move turf when they are not getting shelled by a wannabe EU member..

They would have to give a huge amount of benefits. Russia has seen US alignment of much of the middle east/north Africa over the last couple of decades due to these wars. Syria is one of the last Russian aligned states so they will want to keep it that way. It's one of the reasons this war has continued on as long as it has. It's a good old fashioned proxy war (with an ISIS twist), the same as many of the African wars during the last half of the 1900s. No one "wins", except possibly the superpower that stays the longest.

How could you be so certain that Assad is behind this?
He's winning so what's the point to use chemical weapon on civilians?
The USA and their dirty politics...

Hillary Clinton has just been on TV calling for further action regarding Syria. It's not her kids going over there is it?

Winning? Winning what? Define "winning".

You insinuate that only the US deal in dirty politics. What about Russia and their dirty politics? How about Iran and Syria? More fanboy politics!
