Issue with GTX 285

For starters what exact model of XFX card is it? You say it's an overclockers edition, which as far as I know doesn't exist. Is it perhaps the black edition? Also what are the clocks set at ie core, shader and memory.

Many people have had issues with factory overclocked Nvidia cards, and specifically having the old "Your Nvidia driver has stopped responding and has now successfully recovered" message.
This can quite often indicate an unstable overclock on the graphic card.

So what to do now? The best bet is to download rivatuner or ntune and downclock the video card to GTX 285 stock settings (core 648, memory 2484 and shaders 1476)
It may be that you will only have to tone the memory clocks down a bit to get it stable.

If you find this works then it obviously means your video card is not fit for purpose, as it will not run at the speed it's factory set to. If this is the case you will need to start an RMA procedure.

Hope this helps :)

Hey ppl, sorry for the delay.. OK so heres what I got.

my graphics card is XFX nVidia GeForce GTX 285 xXx Edition 1GB GDDR3
The PSU is 1000W iCute Modular ATX Quad VGA Power Supply

I will give the riva tuner or ntune a go and see what happens, to be honest, if I get it working, id be happy to leave it as it is, i just want to get this to work for gaming. Be honest though, if it does work, i'd be dissapointed for spending that money for a good gfx card thats supposed to be factory overclocked.

Will let you know how it goes coupe69, and rambo (damo) respect for the info! thanks for all the help ppl. :o)

Google shows it as having '20 amps per 12v rail' and some FAQs suggest it wouldn't power a 275 gtx when people have asked.

You reckon that could be it, the PSU... I have tried everything else mentioned above, when i downclocked the GFX card - it started to stabilise somewhat but still wouldnt allow me to play the game.

I used drivercleaner, it did the job with uninstalling ALL NVIDIA products and I was able to re-install it again. So from my personal experience I haven't had any problems.

I have been told on another forum to try a whole load of options - basically to uninstall everything to do with NVIDIA via the control panel, then the registry, delete any key files that windows keep on here to do with NVIDIA, delete the folders manually in the programme files. reboot. then re-apply everything and it should all work out!

So going to give this a go later on tonight, if it fails me now, i think i'll try putting my gfx card in another computer and see what happens...

If i was you, putting a different GPU in to see if it works would be the first thing to do...

Then you know for sure it is your card that is causing the problem...

Yeah I'll give it a go, see what happens. pretty frustration, a newly built computer and its got problems like this, is this a common thing?

Yeh, it is a common thing, think about it... if you are using brand new parts and connecting them all together, then there is a high chance that a component will conflict with something...

But yeh keep us updated...

I have a oced gtx285 running fine on my 600wat psu,but if it only has 20amps on the 12v rail then that could be it,you sure there is not more then one 12v rail coz 20amps seems VERY low for a 1k unit.

The name suggests its a quad rail design, so it would be 4x20amp and on paper it has enough juice, but as said in other posts - the issue with cheap PSUs is often they cannot sustain thier rated power for any legnth of time, hence system instability and crashing issues, or worse - a fried PSU and other components.

Its a bit of a false economy, like buying an 800w stereo from argos.

I would try the card in another machine if possible. You need to rule out a weak PSU as the cause.

Be honest, I bought the PSU as I was told it would handle my GTX 285 without a problem and I thought for 100 quid you can't go wrong really (or so i thought). Everything else in my PC is pretty much high spec and to be honest, I do want to change my PSU so that I can match it with the rest of my PC components. I am tempted to get the Corsair 1000W.

I can only let you know how im getting along in a couple of days when i find someones PC I can do a quick swap or buy a cheap graphics cards to test it out perhaps?..
