IT are searching my internet browsing history....help!

aye I'd expect if it's a half decent place to be using a proxy that'll be logging everything, so anything you do on the client won't make a difference :)

Besides random acts of violence against your company's hardware (all of it, just to be sure) which will get you far more than a bad reference, there's no way to be sure.

Only the hardware? That is no way to be sure, if you want to remove all potential links you need to get rid of the IT department as well and preferably the person who tipped them off into the bargain - rather difficult to do without raising more suspicion though unfortunately.

Incidentally my work always flags up OcUK as having "suspected offensive language" then tells me that my use must be for a work purpose and what I do will be logged.

I got investigated at my old job because word filters were picking up dodgy stuff. Turned out it was due to me checking webmail and all the spam mails I used to get (~50/day).
Lots of offensive/suspect words but nothing happened to me, I just said I'd be more careful in future.

I am guessing, you ssh to your home server and browse completely freely :D

Its the only way :D

I remember some years ago we had just had WebSense installed at work, and they had set it up monitoring for a month before our training so that we had some real data to work with so the training would be more benificial. We told everyone via an official email stating that they were now being monitored (apparently you have to legally or something?) and during our training 2 staff members kept coming trumps with words searched "lolita" or "playboy girls" etc. Senior management happened to be in the training (as IT we couldnt care either way what your doing, its the stiffs at the top that care) and the unfortunate gits were fired within a week. On inspection their mydocuments (which is mapped to a network share, not stored on their local machines so accessable by anyone at anytime without the staffmember knowing) was chock-a-block full of images and videos of the unacceptable type. Its just common sense that you dont do these sorts of things at work, isnt it? :p

I just got banned from using the internet at work on Monday. I work Fri-Mon overseeing an office, and I'm the only one there after about noon. As a joke my boss told the IT head to check out what I was doing on the net. Now, all I really do is watch Score on BBC and listen to internet radio. That's about 95% of it, but there was a period a few weeks back where I would use proxy websites to play on partypoker.

Now when I open up my browser I just get a message saying i'm not allowed to view this webpage...but it's for all websites!!!

If i was surfing via a public proxy, would the company be able to see what websites I was viewing? Most public proxies advertise porn.....

I haven't spoke to my boss or IT about my being kicked off the net yet...I'm not really sure how I should approach the situation...I have a feeling that when I go into work tomorrow i'll get a bollocking...

Either way i'm pretty sure a company can't give you a "bad reference" they can refuse to give you on. Sure someone else will be able to explain in more detail

if people really want to look at girls in work without worrying if they're being remote logged, then why not connect to the net via wireless adapter { open wireless networks in area needed } or use a mobile phone via usb ( data plan needed }.

with all that use a portable browser that sits on usb with no interaction with pc besides physical memory. no local or remote evidence will be found at work.

surely youd just use a public proxy? unless they can see what u have up on screen or track keystrokes

Depends, if it's going through a proxy and web monitoring/filtering system how do you use/get to the public proxy as they'll likely be blocked (if that makes sense)? :) Most corporate IT depts set systems up so you can't change the IE settings too.

BIG BROTHER IS WATCHING YOU, GET IN A CAR WITH SOME SPARE FOOD AND PETROL AND RUN TO THE VALLEYS!

Well, i normally delete my temp internet files and browsing history every week or so to make my computer run more smoothly.

Im allowed on forums, but just during lunch hours.

Unless you can delete the history from the net server, wiping your machine won't make a jot...they'll still know you've been looking at porn sites.
