The easiest way round this sort of thing is registering a free account at www.logmein.com. This allows you to remote control your home PC from any internet enabled workstation and obviously anything browsed on there isn't logged on the proxy server

yeah thats what i use, can only be used for surfing though as it ebcomes laggy if doing anything else

What about good ol fashioned RDP? I find it the easiest and best, except when some clever git blocks all ports on their firewall

RDP is blocked in most places I've ever worked (as in external RDP). www.logmein.com has never been blocked

Firefox over X11 tunneling via SSH for the win, tbh.

I'm just talking about using a SOCKS proxy on localhost that tunnels over the ssh connection. That is what I assumed they were doing with PuTTY.

By default Firefox has network.proxy.socks_remote_dns set to false.

I assume logmein is an http tunnel of some sort, hence if you have access to the internet (port 80) it wont be blocked. Could always just change the listen port of RDP to 80, should function the same then.

I used to work for an advertising company based in Soho, and their main lifts were located right behind the main reception, which was manned by a gay guy. Pretty much every day he'd be looking at a gay dating site which seemed to have plenty of lewd images on, far too often the lift door would open and I'd see some oiled up hunk on his screen!
I'm an open minded guy, but as clients use the lifts too, I really thought he was being very unprofessional (even for somewhere as relaxed as Soho).
So what happened to this guy?
As he was a long term employee they chose not to sack him, but instead installed a frosted glass screen behind him so no one could see what he was up to. Great result for him I suppose.

Sounds like they avoided the issue, otherwise I can see him playing the gay card...

Sadly this kind of happened at my last place, found a guy looked at certain gay stuff an the guys in charge of the system said they'd been told not to touch it for this reason A rule for one and all that.
