It seems quite sad...

I have never had a card fail (lucky I guess) and even when trying to kill an 8800GT by running Furmark on 320.18 drivers, it still won't bloody die :(

I still look for the best RMA and lack of downtime/customer service.

IME yeah. I have never had a card fail on me but I have had 2 AMD cards arrive DOA and sent another 3 back for various reasons. All AMD and I mix it up every gen. 280-5850 xfire-580 sli-7970 xfire. After reading some peoples horror stories its more piece of mind than owt else
 
I will get jumped on for this but I do notice a lot of the AMD cards need returning but that could just be coincidence.

Maybe that's partly down to the MSI batch of cards that had problems. :D

Interestingly, I remember a thread a long time ago which was about failure rate of graphics cards among forum members, and I think up to but not including the GTX400 series, Nvidia seemed to have significantly worse numbers in that regard.

failure rate, or just a simple show of hands of the total number of forum members with a failure? they are not the same thing :D
 
ive had two cards die on me, one ati one nvidia. so its balanced in my experience. but then again.. it was my only ati card ive ever bought!! *shifty eyes*
 
Never had a card die, even when my PSU blew up and killed everything else in my system my graphics card came out alright, hence i bought the best value i could find rather than the best RMA. I asked the same question when i was making this computer though why RMA seems to be such a big priority, but i guess some of use are lucky, ya read some stories on the forums of people getting 3 graphics cards in a row DOA.
 
Never had a card fail, but I always check the warranty and RMA procedure of each manufacturer when buying new. Even when buying secondhand the ease of RMA for each vendor is taken into account.
 
In terms of a performance, it's all marketing guff where they try to out-do eachother. The fact of the matter is a gtx780 from manufacturer A and a gtx 780 from manufacturer B are both gtx780s and perform the same.

Things to consider when choosing a gpu:
-Cooling is different. Some companies have good coolers some have better coolers.
-Aesthetics. For the amount of money they cost they shouldn't look like cheap tat.
-RMA/Support. Important for any product (This also includes where you buy it from - I don't buy from dodgy retailers or pick up knock off del-boy monitors from korea on ebay, for example)
 
I've never had a card die on me one did arrive DOA, or rather it blew out my PSU and damaged the motherboard. Was quite spectacular, a bang, a blue flash and a puff of smoke. Must have had a short circuit somewhere. :(

Got a replacement under RMA but never got a refund for the replacement PSU. Even had to pay return postage. :mad:

This wasn't OCuk and it was a good many years ago, maybe RMA procedures have changed since then.

it is always worth checking sale of goods act and distance selling regulations - what a company does in terms of RMA support is not always compliant so it's worth knowing your consumer rights and push for what is due

you definitely should have gotten a refund on the postage

to stand a chance on the psu etc., you would have had to take it to a "professional" and get him to write a statement that the GPU was responsible for all of the damage, you might then have had to pursue it through small claims to actually get anything (or via your credit card if you'd paid by it)

Since 1995 I've had 119 graphics cards through my hands from different manufacturers, and I have only RMA'ed 5 cards (I have a full detailed list of every single card I had with it's correct naming - call me g33k :p).

1st RMA - PowerColor Radeon 9800 Non-Pro 256MB DDR-II - defective ram.
2nd RMA - Point Of View GeForce 6800 128 MB - defective ram.
3rd RMA - Gigabyte GeForce GTX 460 Windforce II 2GB OC - would suddenly only be recognized as a default video card in windows. GPU defective.
4th RMA - Gainward GeForce GTX 580 Golden Sample 1.5GB - unstable factory OC settings.
5th RMA - EVGA GeForce GTX 660 FTW 2GB - Dead on arrival (DOA).
6th RMA - EVGA GeForce GTX 660 FTW 2GB - Dead on arrival (DOA). - Great this card was actually the replacement card for the other DOA card !.
