After reading all these comments all i can say is IF u dont like this GO find some other ISP simple.
yep so true
and when these large serial down loaders have gone elsewhere, there will be more bandwidth for the rest of us.
also when they have all move elsewhere and dragged that isp down, they will be wanting to come back to VM

Good, it will stop people abusing the service. Lets look at the simple math,

-if you only downloaded 3gb a day that would equal 90gb a month roughly at full speed.

-Plus then you could continue downloading at 500k a second for 4 hrs.

-Then another 3gb in a hour

-After 12 until 4pm you can download at 2mb a seconds all day.

Yeah really restrictive service.

Sad but not unexpected, I hope that when 20mbit goes national XL sub's may well see 10mbit cap during peak, if not again it's no big deal, if i've got a queue going i'm not likley to be bothered if it downloads at 5mbit for 1/3 of the day, it'll have been downloading at 20mbit for 2/3 of the day, still considerably better than a monthly capped product. It should also improve performance in highly utilised nodes so better for the majority. I do see this being an issue in shared homes though...

I work for an ISP I'm well aware of how much it would cost, as such it should be made available as at least a new tier package for unlimited usage 20mb. And to take a part from there research as we are only 5% of there extreme users it should not put to much strain on the network at all.

Its cost cutting pure and simple.

How much would you be willing to pay for an unlimited 20mb connection on a different higher tier?

You say it is only 5% of customers. But 5% is still a fair few people, if all of them are pulling 20mb constantly it is going to put strain on the network at some point.

I won't disagree with you in saying it is cost cutting. I would imagine with all the Sky stuff that has happened that Virgin Media are getting smart and trying to recoup the money lost else where within the group.

Yes because I wasn't paying for 5Mbit, I was paying for 20Mbit.

Think you missed that out of your "simple maths." Have a  on me.

Well don't download massive amounts between 4pm and 12pm and then you will receive 20mbit, you want 20mbit unlimited then pay for it and stop ruining other peoples service through selfishness, after all it was these peoples selfishness that have caused these restrictions to be implemented in the first place. Not aimed at you directly just people who abuse the service.

Oh and have  back.

Be interesting to see this this traffic management can be monitored by users somehow. 3gb for XL is the published figure, I wonder if this reduces in highly oversubscribed areas.....

These restrictions didn't bother me when I first heard about them. But I've just downloaded my first big file since it came into effect and I've been capped at 50KB/s. :(

Can't say I'm too pleased with that.

Well im on the "so-called" 10mbps service from vm and all weekend its just been crap and is always more at peak times.(4pm-12am-ish)

cpc3-nwrk1-0-0-cust472.nott.cable.ntl.com..is the area i am in and atm minute i am getting speeds downloading of around 0.5mbps/1mbps and thats testing it from fast file game sites like blueyonder and not just speedtest.net.

Im tempted to ring vm's tech support but i did do a few weeks back, had an engineer out who checked everything etc which apparently was all ok.

So i can understand this traffic shaping idea for heavy users but i have hardly downloaded anything of a big size for awhile and cant understand why the download speeds are so poor.

Anybody else in this area having the same problems?.

Pretty sick of it tbh, especially when we are forking out around £35 a month. :(

Won't make any difference to me beause all my downloading is between 23:15 and when it finishes way before 16:00.
I never upload except when I'm updating my site so no probs here.

I would quite happily pay anything upyo 80 quid a month for unlimited 20mb. plus with the money they would gain they could upgrade the network further and hopefully stop all the moaners who dont download like us.

to the moaners your choice not mine, your happy browsing the web and hardly downloading move to adsl or quit your moaning. I hate the smiley but u lot deserve one

Evidence that it placed any strain whatsoever please.

Someone who works for an ISP already said in this thread that it's a farce.

You did it first, just giving you your ****ty rolleyes back. ;)

It's clearly not any other users fault its the network infrastructure that can't handle it. VM have already stated some areas can only achieve up to 16mb before a infrastructure upgrgade. VM chose the chepeast way to ahcieve a nationwide 20mb service, traffic shaping was inevitable.

:p

When someone is downloading a particularly large amount of information over a long period of time, it can slow down the internet speed for other users who might just be checking their email or browsing online. So to make sure our service is fair for everybody, we sometimes moderate the speeds during peak times (4pm till midnight) for customers who are downloading an unusually large amount at these times.

Oh noes the people doing this said so, it must be true! :p

Well I have no reason to doubt them, also it seems logical really there is only so much bandwith to go around.
