It was only a matter of time; Virgin Media start packet shaping

A)

Traffic shaping won't cause that :/

Sorry misread it - well it'll be the same with any connection mate. It depends how fast the download is going. You could always limit it.

im have limit to D: 50k\s | U: 3k\s -_- and still does it. before with Blueyonder i can play games and download heavyly at any speed i wanted and wont cause a lag.

Scheduled downloads which automatically shut the PC off when they are done.

Regardless of the source of the download, I'm pretty sure that there will be an appropriate app to support it e.g. Flashget for web based downloads, Newsleecher for Usenet. Both are able to shut down after they have finished.

What would be the problem of setting them off in a morning?

As I said, each top their own. I just don't personally see the issue here :)

The problem is I don't leave my PC on and I won't because I can't afford the extra electricity costs, simple :p.

But it would switch itself off after it finished

Unless your talking about stupidly huge downloads (tens of gigs), the amount of time required with a 20MB connection (if it were maxed) would equal minimal electricity costs.

Edit...

Sorry, assuming you were on 20MB that is.

That doesn't matter either way. I still can't because at the moment I live at home and I pay for the internet side of things (well, for us to be on the XL BB speed which is an extra £12 over 4mb BB). I'm not usually allowed to leave my PC running and I can't contribute to the electricity costs at this time.

some people on ocuk see life through rose tinted glasses.

Of course everyone can afford top whack 37quid a month broadband and be able to have their own server farm running 24/7 in their loft.

If some people can, everyone can. Can't they.

We get our TV from Sky and our phone/broadband package from Virgin. We would save around £12 by switching both of those to Sky and get "up to 16Mbit" which I'm assuming would be faster than 4Mbit at the very least.

I've also looked at Be but it's a little expensive. Sky seem to offer a huge discount for Sky TV customers.

go for it then, sounds best option for you :D

My mates sky is ok, runs at full speed wired, wireless is a totally diff story though :P

does contention mean anything to you people? would you rather have that instead? howabout 25/50 people sharing that 20mb pipe 24/7. i think you'd prefer things to stay the way they are....

Never had any traffic problems here in Preston, and Preston is supposedly one of the worst for it which is why they were testing the traffic shaping here in the first place. Virgin are just cutting costs, that's it really.

Thats quite funny actually, are you actually having a go becasue some people want/ have gotten cheaper deals on their price plan and because of this they are greedy? :p

If you are then you must be in a very small minority of people who would rather pay more for somethng when they dont have to, i can only assume you are either loaded, or dont care about your household outgoings.

As for the 12 month contract rubbish, nope thats only when you get their free router. I certainly wouldnt agree to another 12month contract, mainly because it was obvious this was going to start happening with throttling/capping.

Personally i am annoyed about it but it could be a lot worse. Just wait until Sky get their BB customer base right up and watch the exact same thing happen

nope, im 21, just finished being a student, and im not with VM. My point still stands, everyone walks blindly into things then blames everyone else when its not as it seems, i just find it really dumb and generally dont have any sympathy.

Just for you seeing as you clearly have no idea:

Xblive content
Demos
Betas
Itunes
Trailers
Direct2Drive games
Patches
Streaming TV services
Buying applications via the web
Uploading files

......

yeah  even at 640kb/s you'll rinse through that on download.
