Anyone familiar with it?

Is the certificate worth anything? Any employers here who would see it as something worth having?

I may have the opportunity to be trained FOC...Just need to know if it's worth my time.

Cheers in advance :)

Yes most definitely get it. Sadly the way the IT industry is going it's becoming all about what certificates you have rather than what you've done :(

Lots of places are now going the ITIL route. Is definatley handy if you are looking to go into a service management or IT management roll.

There are numerous differnet levels of ITIL qualification though with ITIL foundation being the lower on. The next one up (can't remember the name at the moment) is the one to go for if you are interested in using it for career enhancement

Any free training that leads to an official certification is worth taking imo no matter what it is!

ITIL seems to be the flavour of the month at the moment, my company is sending me on a course in June!

It's worth doing, I'm supposed to be doing at my place at the moment. It is also the most boring course, ever.

firstly. in my opinion any free training is good training. In reference to itil i would say if you had to post this thread to ask, foundation level is all you need. Depending on your company maturity level, v2 might be better than 3. Ill do a proper post in here later on when i get home.

I'm familiar with what it is and my last three roles have been in ITIL environments. Perhaps I should have been clearer; I've been offered Foundation FOC and seeing as I'm not looking to be in a position to *use* full certification for a few years yet, should I take the chance now to grab foundation and use it as a bargaining chip in the future or simply keep working my ass off until such a stage as I am 'ready' to use full certification?

i agree. In honesty unless you are the service desk manager, incident manager, change manager etc you wont need a practitioner, and unless you are the service support or delivery manager, or implementing itil from scratch you dont need the managers certificate-

Would having the foundation show a potential employer that I have a complete understanding of how the practices work and that I should 'fit in' to an existing ITIL environment much easier than someone who has no exposure?

with foundation i wouldn't say a complete understanding of the ITIL principles but it would show and general level of awareness of the principles and their implementation in an ITIL based company

That's exactly how the Foundation courses for ITIL and many others (like PRINCE2) work. At least in my experience. I've only done PRINCE2 myself (but I did the Practioner too), but the lad across the way has his Foundation in ITIL and he says the same as me. Which, incidentally, is very well summed up in the above quote - you can fit into an ITIL-based environment far better than someone who has no idea (provided you're not dense :D).

i went for an interview the other week at a place that was about 95% of the way through becoming itil 'compliant'. i've done the itil foundation and they were really impressed. i think it's one of the reasons i was offered the position. at the end of the day it's only a 3 day course (at least ours was) and an hour exam - so if it's free, yes its worth your time. at the end of the day it's only fancy terminology for common sense anyway!
