It's too hot :(

What looks like 3 glorious days coming up, and I'm off work for 2 of them, but looking like less than pleasant weather from Saturday :( in fact could be quite unpleasant for anything involving physical exertion.

Working at home ( home office ) the main window faces the sun so in the day even when the blinds are closed the room temperature goes up to to 7000 million degrees
I have to have the doors shut because I have customers confidential information on my PC screen which I don’t want people to see ……. With no air conditioning the room becomes a nuclear furnace .
And that's why I bought a portable AC unit a couple of years ago. It's fairly noisy but when I'm concentrating on work I don't really notice it, and I've got a headset for Teams calls. :)

How's your energy bills?
Most units use about 1.0-1.5kWh for an hour's use, so even on lighter use you'll see a small uplift in your monthly electric bill.

EDIT: Just saw the BBC News health alert for the upcoming weekend and feeling smug that I bought a portable unit last week :) should only need to use it for a short while as the weather looks to be cloudy here, so very little solar gain through the windows meaning inside temp won't rise too high.

30-40% chance of a shower Fri-Mon and a high of 25C forecast in Southampton by Met Office, nothing like a 30C warning at mo.

Great weekend to be outside for the majority of the time. Not sure what we’ll do with that forecast tbh if it really picks up. Our itinerary leaves us pretty exposed.

A little higher :). Seriously though, I only usually have mine on the lowest setting unless it's over 30c, and, from memory when I plugged a tester in after buying it, the lowest setting runs about 450w. On max mine runs at 1.1kWh. I don't keep the AC on all day; usually 10 or 15 mins after I jump out of the shower if I'm still sweating after drying off and probably a couple of hours in the afternoon on really warm days. Keeping the curtains closed helps and I did buy a window vent panel for my AC unit from eBay so the cold air isn't all escaping out the window.

AC uses hardly anything. People think it costs a fortune to run. It’s pricey to install, but pennies to run. Cooled the whole house throughout the year last year for about £150. That was with nightly air con and months at home. £24 for my gaming room based on current prices.

Indeed, I wouldn't say it was 'loadsamoney' :). From a fairly basic spreadsheet I made, and using the rate I paid in my last bill:

Code:
Item Amount Watts Total Watts Hours/Day Daily Monthly Yearly
Aircon 1 450 450 2 £0.31 £9.32 £113.33

Worth every penny.

Funny how much we’re prepared to spend on keeping warm, but not keeping cool. The heat actually bothers me more.

What ac do u have because most consume 1.5 to 2kw an hour which is like over £1 an hour. Hardly pennies

Cold air can still escape. You can't keep a place cool for long vs the reverse in keeping a place warm when it's cold outside.

Daikin Emura. You’re assuming they’re on full whack the entire time as the old units used to do, the inverters now control their output. Your scenario is actually really rare and why they are so efficient. Even on the 40C+ days plus gaming heat last summer, whilst more active, my AC unit wasn’t close to full output. At night they’ll switch off after a while.

Sure, on full we’d have a 12.5kw system! We’d also live in a fridge.

Our most active room was our south facing main bedroom that used about £33. Of course we only paid higher energy prices for half the year, so it would actually have been cheaper.

Are there ones that are floor standing and don't require professional install?
