I've been scammed...

I didn't receive anything this week surprisingly, gonna ring the Bank tomorrow see if they can do anything.

Are you honestly surprised?

Your bank won't be able to do much at all i would imagine, chances are the scum has already been to his bank to remove the money and spent it!

Our house has never had insurance.

I called up the bank, and they said they can't do anything, my own fault really, I don't think I will ever buy anything again from Gumtree, I'll just stick to bay and OCUK.

Bit frustrated since I have his details which are most probably fake, time to move on I suppose.

This does not make sense, Gumtree is designed for cash on collection local sales. For that it is fantastic and I have sold loads through Gumtree hassle free including phones. It is like the good old fashioned way of doing things pre eBay.

Gumtree is not for remote faceless sales. It isn't pitched at that and the fact you fell for that has nothing to do with Gumtree, just how susceptible you were to a scam.

Sorry for your loss, but sadly you probably can't do much.

If you have someones bank details there really should be a way to find out who the account owner is in fraud cases like this.

How are people supposed to know that Gumtree is designed for cash on collection sales? I know now (thanks for sharing your tale of woe Nemesis) but really I think it was an easy mistake to make.

How about that advert on TV that shows some daft bint buying a crappy old LCD TV "for cash in hand"?

Oh and if you have the persons bank details, then surely the police should be interested? He's de-frauded you out of this money, you have his details (and the banks have history of this transaction), so why aren't they interested? I don't think you are being assertive enough!

There is the fact that its mentioned on the website every time you try to contact a buyer or seller. It specifically tells you not to send money in advance and only exchange cash in person.

The police really should persue this, the OP may have been naive and not followed Gumtrees processes but he's been swindled out of £390. The police go on about how online fraud is on the increase so they should do something about it.

If I walked in a shop and the shopkeeper was in the back room stocktaking or something this doesn't give me the right to help myself, if I walked out with £390 worth of goods I'd expect the police to actively investigate and nick me.

Has the op actually been to the police? if its an easy arrest for them they will likely follow it up

You never know they might already have complaints about the same guys bank details
