Yeah but Shuttle's are garbage. At least with the iMac if you feel you've made a mistake after a couple of months you can sell it for what you paid (because you got the discount).

I'd be all over the iMacs if they supported the VESA mounts like the first lot of G5s.
Really? I've had many many Shuttles in the past (in fact, the SFF forums were my previous haunt) and I've found them good for what I needed (no overclocking).

Ahhh, damn you to hell Slogan, tempting me..

Yeah, I know what you mean.

I'm mental-ing up what my gaming rig is going to be like and I had considered a Mac Pro (as it's the only way to go).

My main computer at the moment is a 2.16Ghz, C2D, 2gb MacBook Pro and with Leopard I'm just finding it so sluggish. The wireless internet connection is very poor and Adium is cutting out at least a few times a day. Photoshop CS3 is slow, as is ripping DVDs and the disc drive is spitting out discs (When burning) with what I think it is a hardware problem.

I'm so tired of it that I think the Vista computer will be my main rig. I don't want to go back to Windows but on hardware at the same price (£1,300) I find Windows to be simply better.

Macs being able to run Windows is such a huge thing - that truly hasn't been fully put to use yet, in my opinion. But Apple charging stupid prices for diluted gfx hardware just makes the decision for the vast majority of top-end pro users, a very easy one.

Not dumping on your thread EVH and I understand the premium you pay for Macs is for both design and of course the brilliant OS X. I just wish Apple would realize there's a market of pro users there who know that a 7300GT is no longer: "High End Graphics".

Enjoy your iMac and be sure to get lots of pictures up. 24" inch screens are brilliant and I remember the first time I plugged my MBP into the 2407, looked great. :)

edit--
Or maybe scratch the last sentence! :D

I'm just going by the reports of increased failures of them lately, garbage was probably a bit strong.

Ah, I'm torn.. I know I'll be kicking myself if I cancel the iMac but the gaming rig I could get is so so tempting to me..

I bought a G5 iMac not long after they came out as I was buying my games on the 360. Sold all my high end PC gear and was happy. Then the mac just started to feel sluggish and I ended up going back to PCs. Still not gaming on it, but it just feels so much snappier. Suspect the new iMacs are much better now what with them having normal CPUs now.

I'll make you a deal..

Any problems with the iMac and I'll get the gaming rig.

By then it could be all too late.

You could be Mr Condensation screen and everyone will be laughing at you.

One thing I will say seriously is that Macs hold their value, as mentioned previously. Your PC value will obviously plummet, however, gaming on a PC is like no other type of gaming. Just sold off my Xbox 360 to help fund my new PC.

Mouse and keyboard are for the win. Especially with my skills.

Im thinking this at the moment.

I have been waiting for ages for a new Mac Pro with new graphics. Really hope there out in January or december time. Really want to sell my G5 before it decreases in value more. I could do it now i guess seeing as i have a MBP.

As you say though leopard seems sluggish. The GUI feels slow on the G5, im not sure if its the 9600 pro in it or that its PPC.

My mates new iMac 20" is extremely fast and the GUI is fast and responsive, more so than my MBP 17".

Not sure what it is about my MacBook Pro. Last throw of the dice will be adding another gig to it and seeing if that does anything - but I'm not optimistic.

The new Mac Pros will probably have something just under the 'high end' product of the moment, which just makes them pointless. You then have to buy the over-priced standard card and add a 8800 or 8900 to it - which really isn't ideal.

Really thought Apple would have got their act together with their own games coming out - but it appears not thus far. Well, not without tearing your heart and your bank manager's heart out before doing so.

Its an argument I hear all the time and most end up going for the PC. Surely good old "Steve" or the appropriate department must hear the cries of the gaming crowd.

I thought with the move to Intel the hardware would come swiftly up to scratch but they still don't offer that "gaming tower".

A lot of the more, shall we say, militant Mac fans shoot down the argument with "if you want a gaming machine then get a Mac Pro." Aside from being stupidly expensive a Pro is the most lop-sided gaming solution you could probably get. Masses of CPU power and RAM and little in the graphics department, which is where it counts these days.

The day they offer it there will be a lot of switchers. And to be honest I dont think it will eat into their Pro sales as much as they must anticipate.

I told you, you would cancel it or return it...

Cheers Josh, I'm actually proposing tomorrow so it's all getting the better of me today.

As for cancelling the iMac, nahh, I won't.

I thought about getting the PC long and hard but I don't know if I can be arsed to configure XP and generally faff around with Windows at the current time.

Come June/July I could flog the iMac for a tidy some and hopefully save money towards a Mac Pro by then, and, fingers crossed Apple will offer a decent gfx solution for a palletable price.

...otherwise if I get the condensation issue then I'll get a refund and go PC.

On the subject of graphics cards and apple, the past few weeks ive been looking at macs as i plan on getting one sometime next year, however i only just came across their prices for graphics cards and its nothing short of criminal.
How on earth can apple justify selling a 512mb x1900xt for £270, you can get 8800GTX's for that price. Its worth a quarter of what they sell it for >< And going by the upgrade cost from a 7300 > x1900 they are selling the 7300 for £120......WHAT ARE THESE PEOPLE SMOKING.

seriously if next year they release new mac pro's with newer Gcards, say 8800GT for example, what are they gonna charge for one? £600?

also i was wondering, is it actually possible to buy a x1900xt and convert it so it runs in a Mac to avoid the stupid prices they charge?

Hey all,

The iMac has arrived!! 4 days ahead of my estimate.. quite pleased.

Pity I didn't receive any "tracking" emails, so it really was a suprise.

This thing is huuuuuuuge, have to post pictures after i'm configured up :D
