ive never played doom 3 or quake 4

I really enjoyed Doom 3 personally. Quake 4 not so much, just didn't have the feel of a Quake game and can't say it look's particularly amazing either unlike Doom at its time.

Id proberly agree though that Prey is worth a purchase more than either given it's more than just your normal FPS. Surprised there's so many HL2 haters here

I very much enjoyed Doom 3 actually. I had been waiting for it for years and got it on the day of release and wasn't disappointed! Sure, it has very simplistic gameplay similar to the original Doom games, that was the developers intensions and they succeeded.

I found the game to be very atmospheric and eerie. You get that sense of isolation which I really liked. The artwork and design efforts that went into the game are really very good. I really enjoyed visiting the different parts of the mars facility and it certainly gives you the impression you are in a true lived in world where people work. Panels hang from walls, cables run across floors, lights flicker realistically, and machinary all looks like it serves a purpose as well as every room room and corridor you find yourself in.

The game engine itself is still pretty impressive after 3 years and the real time lighting and shadows certainly are used to good effect to create a lot of Doom 3's atmosphere.

The demons and monsters in the game all look excellant and are all brilliantly animated, especially the imps!

I actually liked the story, simple but effective I thought and you certainly get the feeling that you are the only hope to end the chaos. I also enjoyed reading through the dead employees emails on their PDA's, pretty eerie but entertaining at the same time and futher emphasises that you are present in a true lived in, working environment.

The game really does mostly consist of strolling around corridors and rooms getting from A to B whilst taking out demons that pop out on you as you travel. Othertimes you have to locate a PDA in order to unlock doors but yes, it really is very linear like the old games. If it werent for the brilliant atmoshere, the visuals, design and artwork in the game, I would have gotten board pretty quickly. I just generally enjoyed being on the mars facility.

As for Quake 4, in all honesty its very similar. Very linear, mostly getting from point A to B, unlocking doors, guiding someone from point A to B etc. Although it doesnt have that great atmosphere that Doom 3 has. In my opinion Doom 3 is the much better game and you should deffinetly try it out. Don't rush through it, take your time and see everything there is to see and youll enjoy it :)

I agree with a lot posted here. If you want good cheap fps shooters go for HL2, Farcry, Riddick and Prey.

Doom3 and Quake4 are pretty, but very old school, simplistic and samey. I got through Doom3, but I let Quake4 slip - there just wasn't enough to draw me in.

Riddick is one of the few console ports or movie tie-ins that actually worked really well. It should have been crap but it was excellent :p Highly recommended.

Yes Prey is a lot of fun actually. Its also uses the Doom 3 engine only it is much enhanced with what appears to be parallax mapping and prettier specular lighting. Its a pretty short game though, you most likely would have finished it in 8 hours but what your given is of good quality.

Far Cry is also enjoyable and deffinetly an eye opener with the lush foliage and pretty water, pretty impressive for a 3 year old game. The game play is pretty standard though, gunning down mercenaries who all say the same cheesy little comments when you engage them. Deffinetly recommended though as the large open spaces means there are many ways to complete the level which is cool.

Half Life 2, doesn't really need much said. Its awesome and if you havn't already played it you need to!

:)

serious sam 2 should be played with friends on serious mode co-op if you'v never been lucky enough to have a go, it is by far one of the best experiences EVER:P

Just finished playing/completing HL2---!EXCELLENT!
Now just have to finish HLS, HL2lc & install HL2e1.

never got round to that myself. Might do soon though, summer hols and new mouse call for some fun.

Because of the lack of new game's and this thread I've went back to Quake 4 to give it another go and I really wouldn't recommend it to anyone, the game is a real backwards step for the series the level weapon and enemy design is just truly awful

Doom3 is a top game, reasonably long, atmospheric in places and IMO the 2nd best FPS of 2004.

Quake4 isn't quite as good but still worth playing.

Been playing through it for the first time the past week or so, really enjoying it and the atmosphere, reminds me of a 'Ghost Train' ride!

I play it at night in a dark-room with some phat sennheiser headphones, can't fault the game, never played anything like this before. Using a CD2 E2140@3200MHz, 2GB Crucial SE RAM and my new X1950XT 512MB, playing at 1600x1200/Ultra/2XAA/V-Sync on and the display is a 24" DELL.

I think this game would really benefit from an EAX capable sound card and a surround system, then you could hear the exact location of the nasties!

I gotta laugh at all the people who thought Doom 3 was bad and HL2 was good! :D

HL2 is like first person Tomb Raider, yes it's nice to have some puzzles to do but sometimes you just want to use that thing you have in your hands that shoots bullets. It's as "samey" as Doom 3, except it overdoes it with puzzles instead.

Plus Valve seemed happy to design an engine that needs to break the gameplay up with some stupid "Loading..." screen that perforates every level in the game. It's impossible to get immersed in HL2, as when you do, you get forced to stop for 30-60 seconds.

I have to say though, it's not a bad game, it's just nowhere near as good as the original, which is still breathtaking.

Doom II with JDoom mod

One of the best FPS ever ! You will actually enjoy shooting demons with the shotgun instead of going 'how it was back in the day' !
