I've only gone and done it

Still don't get the apple care thing, I didnt pay the extra when i bough my MBP on HE, but I've rung them after 1y3m and 1y4m to get them to replace things with no problems.

No.

For ALL Higher Education purchases you get 1 year phone, 3 years hardware support AS STANDARD.

The £50 gives you additional 2 years phone support.

Aah, I also thought this.

When I went to the apple store in Regent st ,London, I tried to argue this, and even showed them the HE website where it said 3 years as standard. i even went to two different geniueses to see if this was right. They were having none of it, i didnt bother to argue anymore and paid the extra.

Got done over a bit, now youve said EVH, but oh well... :(

Can anyone give me some tips as to what to do when I get it?

Should I install the new RAM before plugging it in for it's first charge?

I know I should let it fully charge before doing anything else to it.

Should I boot from CD and write zero's and then re-install Leopard before I've even booted into the OS for the first time?

Anything else I should be aware of before I start installing Vista and all my software?

Cheers

Anything else I should be aware of before I start installing Vista and all my software? Nope, I presume it's x32 Vista?

Cheers

Edit: Just read your other thread, use VMware Fusion if you want x64 Vista, Bootcamp doesn't work properly with x64 (lack of drivers etc).

You can use it and charge at the same time. No need to leave the Mac off while charging.

No reason to wipe the HDD - the factory pre-install is fine, just delete the Office test drive from Apps and maybe Quicken if it's there. There's no application bloat such as you would get on a Tier 1 PC manufacturer.

quoted for truth :p got everything working apart from iSight and graphics card.

I thought graphics card was working, but it was only setup as generic video card, so aero didn't like it too much, lol

Uninstalling 64bit, and trying my 32bit version now, i'll let you know how that goes :D

32 bit works fine with bootcamp.

cool :) with the 64bit version i kept getting an error message on boot, something like:

"partition table on disk 80 in error, please fix using a vista FDISK, blah blah"

any ideas why that might be?

I had to reformat the bootcamp partition in order to install vista (using the vista drive selection option, during install), could that have messed things up?

cheers

Cheers for the info Magicboy. Is that for the very first charge? just plug it in, turn it on and let it charge whilst it's doing it's thing?

I only asked about writing zeros because some of the more active bods in here do it as a rule, EVH etc...

I had thought about Fusion but the only reason I want Vista is to run games and as I understood it, bootcamp gave better performance when running games that Fusion.
I don't mind 32bit Vista, just thought if I could get 64bit it would be a bit better.

Aye. Turn it on, play with it :D

Mine took a good couple of hours - above around 90% the battery charges much more slowly. Plenty of time to download my holiday snaps and play with iPhoto.

I'm unsure on the reason for zeroing out the drive, unless perhaps it was a refurb. I'm a stickler for properly set up windows machines, but the factory Tiger installation lasted on my MBP until I got Leopard. I got lazy and upgraded but the result was rather unstable. Got myself a bigger HDD and started afresh on that.

Go for 32bit Vista or XP. Graphics performance under virtualisation is no good for gaming.

Good stuff cheers. I think it might be a perfectionist thing - clean install decided exactly what gets installed that kind of thing.

I did have a feeling virtualisation was a problem for graphic intensive programs which is why I needed it to work in bootcamp. MonkieMann has found out for me that 32bit is what I need. :)

The one advantage of a re-install is the customisation options. By default there's a pile of language files and printer drivers you'll probably never need. It worth about 3Gb on Tiger, Leopard is likely similar.

I zero mine when ever I re-install, but your wasting your time when it's a fresh install straight from the factory, it's not like things have been installed and reinstalled.

I've just seen on Mac Rumours that "within the next few weeks" there's going to be a MBP update including the new multi-touch trackpads and Penryn processors.

Not sure whether to hold the order or not now. I was waiting till MacWorld and when they didn't announce anything for the MBP I thought the next updates would be in June which I wasn't prepared to wait for so I went ahead and ordered it.

Of course "The next few weeks" could be a month or more but even so, it's still a bit of a pain (if the rumour is true).

Don't worry, the machine won't get any slower.. although they're likely to come out before March I'd say :)

Hehe, I'm just a bit peeved that they made no announcement about it or anything at Macworld. You'd expect all the latest news but there wasn't a sniff of it.

I've ordered all my software and stuff now anyway so it seems a bit of a waste to have it lying around for a month or so.

I know it's still going to be a killer machine but I guess it's a case of "I want the newest and shiniest and I missed it by a month".

Ah well.

You could always just move it on if a new version comes out. They hold their value sow ell it's a viable option.
