EDIT: Woops my fault, youve already said this :o

Just a quick tip about PG, id use it mainly because the plain text file with the listed IP's seen below

http://www.simply-click.org/uploadertest/pg2_plaintext.asp

Can smply been copy and pasted into the Guarding.P2P file in the programs directory and Bingo.....231 IP ranges instantly installed into your new firewall

Curiousity m8 how do u add them other ips into the guarding p2p file...do u have to add them manually...if i save the list as plain text and start up pg it wont laod them up...just loads up the ones that come with the program as standard...

In your peer guardian folder is a file called guarding.p2p. Click to open this and windows prompts you for a program to use. Use notepad, copy and paste the new IPs and then save and exit.

edit> you need to exit and restart peer guardian for the new list to be loaded.

Also, look back over the thread for my update script, it does the update automatically for you, which is useful for running regularly and making sure you have the latest IP block ranges.

cheers morte....ill give that a go....

comatose....how do u do the update script...never done one and i need to know how to create one and where to put it...

ta guys

Okay,

  • First download the script: PG_Update.zip
(If you downloaded it before then grab it again as I've just repackaged it with an additional batch file).
  • Extract the files to the PeerGuardian program folder. i.e. by default this will be something like:
    'C:\Program Files\PeerGuardian_1.96b'
  • If you don't have PeerGuardian version 1.96b then you will need open the 'PeerGuardian.bat' file (in notepad) and change the line...

    start PeerGuardian_1.96b.exe

...to reference whatever your PeerGuardian executable is called.
  • Run PeerGuardian.bat whenever you want to start PG.

You could also go one step further and create a batch file to startup both PG and your favourite P2P program such as KaZaA Lite.;)

m8 when the update runs it opens a new copy of peer guardian, know why? I cant make head nor tails of it/

edit - never worry, I've figured it out :)

A fairly good general rule is:
If you are just minding your own business at the PC and the firewall pops up with "Do you want to allow program X to access the Internet?" the answer is nearly always "No".

However, I keep getting svchost.exe trying to access. This looks as if it is part of the OS. Does anyone know what it does?

Take a look at soem of the pages on the process google came up with. It looks to be a process that runs services from dll's so some legit services may be trying to access the net. Take allok at the components that go with svchost.exe to see what dll's those might be.

Great Post Iver, its nice to have all this info under one roof!

I just had one suggestion and that was your recommendations for AntiVirus programs.

I believe there are better programs out than AVG. In PC Extreme(new Mag) first issue they did a supertest. AVg only picked up on 67%. There are numerous otherr good ones availiable. Such as:

Fire(2.7) www.fireav.com
Avast 3.0.499.1 www.avast.com

However, the best and the one i use is:

AntiVir 6.16.08.59 www.free-av.com

It is a great rty it out!

Another very hand security test that probes a plethora of ports and services, and returns the results with a fantastic explanation of what each one does :)

Shields UP! :)

Excellent guide Mr Athlon (and contributors!)

I recently overhauled my system security, and now run the following:

Norton AV 2003

ZoneAlarm Pro 4

Spybot

And to stop those pesky cookies and pop-ups (Zone Alarm blocks them to!) I use Mozilla Firebird as my main browser, with built in cookie control and pop-up blocking, and Mozilla Thunderbird as my email client, with html emails blocked at the server.

The various security tools at Gibson research ( www.grc.com ) are also a great help in setting up your PC security.....

The links for the IP's for Peer Guardian are coming up 501, anyone know of another link/list or maybe someone could host the list.

Thanks.

TDF.

edit/ seems site was down for a few days, too many hits or something. Now back up, and have list. :)

One of the IP's in that least stopped me from connecting to SETI earlier, didnt catch which one. But will make a note of it next time.

A few addresses on that list have been stopped.

TDF.

edit/ this is the one that stops seti connecting, cognet communications 66.28.250.122
