What is the general opinion between people who take an interest in cars with new ish Jaguars? Im talking specifically the F and E pace. My wife wants a new car, shes fallen in love with the F Pace, its within budget used (20k ish), we were all set and then a mechanic friend of mine said they are absolutely awful, the DPF goes on them and the electrics are pants.

I cant see anything online to back this up but he usually does know his stuff...so yea, do they tend to be poorly built? If so what similar cars would be recommended?

Something like this is what shes looking at but ideally 2019 and newer (aware will nip over budget)

Thank you

The problem with these Ingenium diesels are the recommended service intervals being something ridiculous like every 2 years or 21k miles, far too long imo. I believe early versions did suffer reliability issues that your mechanic is probably referring to. My advice would be to check the service history of any examples you're looking at and try to get as new a model as possible.

Its a nice car but if I’m honest, I wasn’t a fan of the original F pace, mostly due to the interior and infotainment system so I discounted it and ended up buying a D300 Velar at the time. They have however facelifted in 2020(?) which I sat in recently and its leaps ahead. The early reliability issues have also been rectified.

I’m not sure what the market is like but if your wife likes them then there’s not much you can do ;) just make sure to shop around, try to get a reasonable spec with newish infotainment software.

I don’t believe the old ‘you need 2 Jags because one of them will inevitably be broken’ reputation still applies anymore despite what people say.

Why in ‘your opinion’ is the service

I've got an ingenium engined XE & i use a local specialist. They have told me that the engine is known for issues when following the official interval, the transversely mounted Land Rovers are supposedly worse though as they like to fail regens & dilute the oil. Something about the DPF being mounted too far from the engine.

They say they are far less prone to timing chain issues if you cut the oil change interval down.

I’ve had them as loan cars when my Discovery is in, in comparison to the Evoque they quality is quite poor. The Evoque is so cheap at the moment maybe an alternative? No real reliability difference.

Not to hijack the thread but I’ve got a facelift XE coming this week :o so had all of these concerns when ordering last year. It’s like any car, service them properly and you’ll run into less issues. I’ve had 2 out of warranty Audis in the past that required major work for example, one of them due to a failed oil pump that almost wrecked the engine.

Back to the OP, service history, second opinion if possible(to check for chain noises etc) and keep the wife happy :) They are nice cars. Ignore my comment about the infotainment as I can see that the example you posted has the same version as the Velar I had which was fairly decent.

Good suggestion from Maccapacca

We had a 2.0 Ingenium diesel engine, we got shot of the car when it was still in extended warranty.

Due to the engine orientation the DPF is packed in and appears to be of a poor design, ours ended up needing oil changes very frequently due to oil dilution issues, i think the record was every 2k.

Fundamentally its a good engine i.e. it goes well, but i'd not touch one out of the 3 year manufactures warranty.

@omnomnom

I absolutely love my Jag XE. Most incredible car I have ever drove.

Now there is a ton of horror stories online and everyone whinges on about Ingenium diesel engines and how unreliable they are. I think a lot of this comes down to servicing and care of the car as I have had zero problems so far and met others with the diesel with no horror stories. Serviced every year without fail, my yearly miles vary between 15 and 22k.
AFAIK, they fixed the timing chain issue on 2019/2020 versions and been fine since from what i've heard from local jag repair shop.

My own view, you can find horror stories on all makes, models etc to scare you out of any purchase.

A friend's XE got to about 90k miles before he started finding metal fragments in the oil. I wouldn't trust the 2 year oil change on anything. It's an eco policy rather than a longevity one.

This is pretty much what he said aswell so clearly he knows his stuff.

I think we will have to give them a miss, its a real shame as they look great.

Petrols are fine diesels aren't great.

But tbh this goes for cars in general across the board with cars.

Every single vehicle out there has an issue or poor design somewhere that can be a potential cost bomb

Funnily enough saw a post by Jaguar on FB and there are so many comments about the 2 litre ingenium engines inc one post about how someone had to replace there engine, there are too many for my liking.

Looks like ill have to up the budget and look elsewhere. Thanks, i owe a few pints!
