Jailbreak ATV3

It effectively boils down to easier piracy.

disagree and agree.

i disagree in the fact i use makemkv on all my dvd's and blu rays. i dont want to then spend hours converting them to mp4.

xbmc can play the mkvs so the jailbroken atv2 is the route i went.

i do agree as you can "aquire" a lot of films online and xbmc will play them.

You don't need to jailbreak your apple TV3. We use ours all the time daily!

Use iFlicks to convert your files and add all the album info movie cover art etc and enjoy. Its a great little box :D

How log does it take to convert a 1080p film?
My guess is quite a long time ;)

nope still no jailbreak for atv3 that's why atv2s are commanding silly secondhand prices on here and on ebay ie a lot more than the new cost of a atv3

Takes about 2 mins for a 720p tv show, 4 mins for a 720p movie and about 8 mins for a 1080p movie. All mkv format.

That's using anyVideo converter HD. Just changes the container, rather than actually re-encoding.

Yeah, I think iFlicks does the same thing - ie nice and fast. Might take a look at that. AnyVideo converts and adds to itunes automatically, but doesn't add the meta data.

It also offers specific conversions etc. Some can take a couple of hours so it depends what you want to do. Its not bad at about £13 I think it is.

I have a hackintosh in the roof thats on 24/7 so it doesn't make any difference to me :)

Re-muxing MKVs into MP4 files is incredibly easy and takes no more than a few minutes per film. I still don't really like using XBMC as I find the interface is clunky compared to its Plex sibling, or using Home Sharing. It also runs nowhere near as smooth on the ATV.
