Thanks to iMacMart for posting the pdanet link! I knew I'd previously used an alternative to MyWi for tethering which had a 'stealth' mode for trying to hide unauthorised tethering from your network, but no amount of googling had shed any light!

It's absolutely essential these days - More and more fake jailbreaks are being released. If you just check Jailbrea.kr, you'll know for sure if it's official or not
