Hi all, I mentioned in Toryglen's thread about doing a group jam and wondered how many people would be interested, well quite a few of you said yep so here we are :D Also, this thread is intended primarily for guitarists, but if you play another instrument feel free to sign up (providing you have the means to record it), kazoos are also aloud.

This thread is for everyone to put their name down and say they'd like to participate, I've also uploaded a backing track we can use.

There's 2 ways this can work, one way is we get a backing track (or two) then depending on the amount of people do one or the either:

First method: Put everyone into 'groups' - I'm thinking there may only be 2 groups of 3, or 2 groups of 4 depending on how many people show interest. Once you have your groups, divide the backing track up to how many people there are in the group, and assign everyone a time i.e if you were the first person in a group you'd have 0:00 - 01:21 to jam or whatever so everyone gets an equal amount of time to Jam. This obviously also depends on how many times the progression in the song goes round, if it's a short track and only goes around twice then it may not be fair to have 3 people jamming over it. This will work (hopefully) like so: the first person downloads the backing track and jams over their alloted time, they then email the backing track with their solo mixed down onto it to the next person, the next person records theirs, and sends it on. Obviously the quality will degrade, but it should still be fine. When the last person is finished, they can upload it and post it here, then others can have a listen and comment on the jams should they wish.

Second method: Just let each person solo over the track, you can solo for the full track or just once/twice around the chord progession that's up to you.

Obviously the first method is the most fun, but also the most difficult to carry out as it relies on other people actually doing their recording, once it's complete though it's nice to listen through as it sounds like a proper group Jam :)

Here's the backing track I've put forward uploaded by riddlermarc: http://www.riddlermarc.co.uk/backing_tracks/07. Rock blues in B minor.mp3

Rules:

Please do not add any effects/EQ to the final mixdown of the backing track with your solo, it may make your tone fit great over the backing track, but may screw up someone's earlier solo.
Please don't go over your alloted time.

So basically, post in this thread with 2 things: if you'd like to participate, and if you want to do a GROUP or SOLO jam.

:)

I'm in for it either ways, but I'm away on friday for 3 weeks, and I'm really, really not going first or second :D

Don't worry, we shall both ride the 'I can't improvise for anything - so I'm going to use silly effects'' tank. You man the killswitch, I'm on the ring mod :D

EDIT - No one has heard of the song comfortably numb have they.....? ;)

Yay :D

Andelusion if you would rather we had everybody over the same track its possible to splice it at an appropriate point and repeat forever. Maybe around 28 bars which gives each player ~1min 20, Up to you

They do this over at Harmony Central and it rocks. If I can sort out a decent way of recording (when I do it through my laptop it lags like hell) then sure, count me in.

EDIT: Method 1 is the way forwards IMO.

I'm up for it. Backing track sounds good, and all-encompassing enough in style for all types of players to come in on. I would be less inclined if it was a speed-metal track or such :D.

I'm more than happy with either option.

The first sounds like a laugh, but is rather dependant on waiting for people, and has the real potential for a mangled track if you're the last to record. Though I'm sure everyone here is more than capable and I think it would work well. I like the idea of extending the loop and having everyone on the same track - even better.

The second method is much more convenient and likely to succeed. I think that would be my preference, simply because most plans for group efforts on here tend to fail rather spectacularly. The "OcUK Solo Comp" a while back worked pretty well (I'm not suggesting making this a competition ;)).

So, YES and SOLO.

The track should sound fine, I've done this with jams with up to 7 people before and the track always sounds OK in the end.

Thanks for all the signups so far guys :)

EDIT:

So we have 4 signed up for definite at the moment.

Hehe all manner of effects are welcome. But it looks like you'll have to give this one a miss:

I'm gonna leave this thread going until Friday, we can call Friday the end of the sign up date, then I'll put those who've put themselves forward into groups, and we can get started then.

Hey, sign me up too.

Would like to get involved with either if i can, but for now put me down for solo (second method). Things are a bit hectic for me at the moment and i don't wanna hold people up if i'm not available to do my bit on the 'group' track for a few days.

:(

Probably for the best. After a fruitless half an hour of trying I have confirmed I am actually worse than what I thought at this sort of activity. I will try hard and put down something basic next time. :) :p

Awh. well gutted would love to get involved but ill have to give it a miss as i really cannot improvise let alone play guitar very well >.< cant wait to hear the end product.

I'd love to do it. :) :D

Rock/blues = my thang at the moment. I was afraid it would be a Vai/Yngwie type backing track and I'd have no chance. But this should be better for far many people.

In short, count me in, and excellent choice of track. I'd also like to do the group recording.

Sign me up as well. :)

Great, group or solo?

Nice one guys, got a good selection of people now :) As I said will leave it until Friday, at the moment though it looks as though we might be on to 2 groups of 3 :) The backing track goes around the progression 3 times iirc, so that should work without having to do any editing.

Now I just need to decide which amp model to use.. Hmm. Shall I have the Cornford mk50 with a Marshall JTM-45 cab? Or maybe just a bog standard Mesa Dual Rectifier.. Oh the choices. :D

lol I'll be using my trusty JCM800 model, does the job for just about anything distorted wise :P I have about 5 different versions of it for different things.

Amp modellers, mwhahaha! Pure tone all the way ;)

Unfortunately i only have a condenser mic atm which is bass heavy and a bit over responsive but im sure it will suffice.

I agree 110%. But the Flextone is in a class of it's own for the money.
