Avatar is director James Cameron's next film. Due out here 18th December 2009.

There is lots to be excited about as almost every aspect sounds incredible. It's hard not to build it up so much but it really promises to be something special. The biggest leap forward is the 3D technology used (link below) where the audience feel truly immersed within it, much more than current 3D movies. Cameron has spent years developing it himself.

This Friday, August 21st has been dubbed "Avatar Friday" when the trailer is launched worldwide, including in IMAX-3D, and online.

Plot
A wounded ex-marine (Sam Worthington) is sent to settle the planet Pandora against his will. He gets caught by the planet’s natives, called Na’vis, and falls in love with one of them (Zoe Saldana). On their planet, he undergoes an experiment to transform into an avatar, another physical version of himself, which is a giant otherworldly creature who he can control through his mind.

After the preview, directors lined up to describe it as “the future”. Excited reviewers said that they could not stop dreaming about it and that it was as though they had just taken a highly addictive drug that had left their mind yearning for more. Neurologists at the screening wondered if the movie had activated parts of the brain that were previously untouched by conventional, two-dimensional films.

I guess I'm the only person who cares more about the plot, the script, the acting and direction, than the special effects?

It is hype talk, I know, but it promises an enhanced visual experience and will encourage creativity from film makers. It may well lead to many more films made with this technology bringing in more money from cinema revenue as people actually go pay to watch films rather than illegally download/rent DVD/wait till TV. Meaning more, better films for all.

But sceptics argue that the importance of Avatar to film studios has less to do with its creativity and more to do with the fact that 3-D movies are hard to copy and therefore, inevitably, attractive to an industry ravaged by online piracy.

Many in Hollywood hope that the Avatar 3-D experience could not only change cinema but save it.

I have to say I've only seen one film in 3D at the cinema (Coraline) and despite the ridiculous price, it's made me want to go and see every film that's coming out in 3D that I want to see at the cinema, otherwise I'll wait for DVD.
 
I dont get it, whats the fuss all about?
I will wait for the trailer before making any judgment but it just sounds like a 3D movie?

I'm fussed about it because it's a James Cameron film. He's been wanting to make this film for 14 years, so he's had a lot of time to gather ideas and perfect it. With Terminator 1, 2 and Aliens in his filmography this has the potential to be special.

Finally! A 3D experience so real it...

  • Switches off everyone's mobile phones
  • Vaporises all smelly, noisy and/or throwable snacks
  • Mutes the gangs of adolescents that have so much disposable income that they think nothing of paying for tickets just to hoot about each others' sexual adventures for ninety minutes
  • Provides convenient 'comfort pouches' for incontinent seat-neighbours
  • Removes you from the auditorium and places you in your very own personal viewing room, just to be on the safe side

I can't wait!
 
I can't wait to see how it has turned out, I like the whole technology/forest thing that should be going on, 15 hours till the trailer is out. It's going to go straight on my TV (no previews on the PC screen) and my neighbours are going to be able to hear every word. :D

Not if he wrote the script, they aren't: he's pretty good at directing other people's scripts (as long as you aren't expecting anything profound or intellectually/emotionally challenging), but a profoundly average writer of scripts, where he has a terrible tendency towards wallowing sentimentality. He's good at action films as long long as someone writes a good script for him, but Kurosawa he ain't.

Cameron does have a good track record of writing/producing and directors great movies, will be interesting to see 3D film technology in the hands of a man who has the vision and skill to use and adapt it properly.

Looking forward to the teaser and lets hope it dont fail.
 
Cannot wait for this film. I'm going miles out of my way to see it in 3D as opposed to watching it in 2D where I work, it would be a travesty to watch it so.
