JAP RPG’s

Slient generic buffed up marine = Check
Guns, guns, bombs, explosions and more BFGs = Check
Storyline involving Russians, Germans, North Koreans, Terrorists or Extraterrestrials taking over the world = Check
Cheesy machoism story involving one man going Rambo and saving the world = Check

Sounds to me like FPS follow the exact same path all the time. :D

So yeah, different genres, different appeals, different cultures. I myself will take a JRPG anyday.

Which is the reason i don't play many FPS's like Crysis.

If i play FPS's its because there WW2 or unique. Or there FPRPG's.

;)

With nearly 22 years of history, don't you think it will be that obvious?

I take it you never played other Final Fantasy's apart from FFVII like pretty much most people new to the series do?

I played FF8 and it was crap, the concept with a sword and gun defeats logic entirely.

And then i played i think it was 10 or 12 with the blonde haired girl (boy) as the main character and that underwater sports game. That was also really crap.

The problem with the FF series is its always the same and its combat system is also.

It needs to evolve and it doesn't.

Why mess with something that square enix have right? The figures speak for themselves and show that the devs have come up with a winning formula. Why mess with it just to try and get people like you to like it? If you dont like it then fine, there a millions who do like it.

Because slashing an enemy and at the same time, shooting from the same sword for extra damage is not a concept?

And that blonde haired boy would be Tidus and that is FF10.

If you think the FF series is all the same, then what would you say about other RPGs, Western ones, or other game genres for that matter?

FFXII evolved the series quite a bit even if it was more of a MMO combat style and the upcoming FFXIII looks to do the same.

You have to be joking, 10 was one of the best FF (of the recent ones anyway). First on the PS2 so had much better graphics and characters had voices for the first time.

As for the combat system always being the same.... just no. They all have similar aspects but some are completely different. 12 (or 11 where they got the idea from) having broken the mould completely.

Ofcourse they have a menu based combat system as do most JAP RPG's, its part of what they are and why people enjoy them.

I'm actually about to make a post about this, so rather then derailing this thread anymore, i'll make a post and reply in there.

Indeed! First game since the Baldur's Gate series to eat up 50+ hours of my time :D

But then I also have grounding in older JRPGs like Chrono Trigger (amazing game!), Breath of Fire 1 + 2 and Phantasy Star 4.

Phantasy Star 4

Sega REALLY needs to do a proper game in the series, and not this Phantasy Star Universe stuff. Although I do enjoy them as well, and I especially loved Phantasy Star Online, they really need to do a proper RPG in the throwback of the good old days. Much of the original Phantasy Star development team are i nthe Overworks division too (Skies of Arcadia, Valkryie Chronicles) so it would be nice if they started something.

What I loved about 4 was the ability to combine people's powers to make even more suped up ones :D

Like Chrono Trigger, but with more variety.

The first comment's interesting... Because actually gun/sword combos have existed in the real world and have been fairly popular at times throughout history, and don't defeat logical at all. On the other hand, people fighting with swords taller than they are and blades a handspan across, and people with machine guns for arms (which can also sometimes fire bullets larger than their guns), those DO defy logic but you seem fine with those ;)

The combat systems have changed from game to game, tbh I find it hard to see how anyone could say otherwise.
