Japanese Evening Classes..

Personally I'm trying to learn Japanese as I am going there again next year and will be travelling off the standard tourist locations more than on previous trips so I want to be able to communicate in case I need to ask for assistance / information. I have no interest in going to China so learning Chinese would be of no use to me.

As for other reasons, well the company I work for does have several offices in Japan and it would be nice to wangle a secondment out there and knowing the language would improve the chances of that. Watching Japanese media ... yes I like doing that but given that the US/UK subtitled releases are significantly cheaper than the JP releases I don't see learning Japanese just so I can import and watch those instead as being a realistic proposition in 99% of cases.

Do people really say stuff like "in vanilla language"? Why not just say "in Japanese"?

Most normal people would say "in Japanese" or "in the original language" :)

I was thinking exactly this.

Hell, there are much more useful things you could learn over a relatively useless to you language.

Seems like a nice friendly full contact gym at first glance.

Go learn Ju Jitsu or Boxing or something, being confident in yourself physically does wonders in your self-esteem.

Yes, because wanting to learn a language is exactly the same as learning a, relatively useless to me, method of physical violence ...

So staying fit and healthy and giving you a sport to take part in + the ability to defend yourself in a worst case scenario situation is less important to you than learning a language you have no reason to learn business or social wise, except to maybe watch creepy foreign children cartoons.

In that case, people might as well give up every hobby they've ever done if it doesn't protect them...

What's wrong with wanting to learn something new? It might not open up any opportunities or anything, but who cares?

Im learning it for fun, but also for when i decide to go there as a trip. But many do it to join the culture or even be able to listen to Anime in Vanilla Language.

Wow, you really have no idea what you are talking about do you ...

I have no interested in learning some sort of barbaric, violent, sport with a bunch of muscle-bound Neanderthals ... see I can make assumptions with no knowledge on a subject too ...

The point of having a hobby is to do something you are interested and that doesn't necessarily mean it's something that has a tangible benefit to you, just something that you enjoy spending time doing/studying ...

You're recommending JiuJitsu or boxing over a language?

What's he supposed to do when trying to communicate to Japanese people? Count to 10? Perform a hip throw? Do some press ups?

Please defend watching foreign childrens cartoons more

Please explain why you are taking learning a language to communicate better with locals when visiting a country (as per my post above) with just learning it to watch animated media (which isn't necessarily aimed at children ... but hey you have your pre-conceptions).

Actually, don't bother ... I'm getting close to putting my opinion of you in a way which would probably get me an infraction/suspension ...

Just ignore him, his insults are fit for a play ground.

They're not children's cartoons, you clearly don't know what you're on about so stop trolling.

Why isn't American dad shown on children's programs? Family guy? Southpark needs censoring?

Trollolololol.

Just admit that you're a sad little man who wants to learn Japanese because you think somehow that will get you into a relationship with an asian girl.

Go to the gym and get a 6 pack, trust me, will net you results much quicker, Asian girls love to practise their English on tourists any way.

there's a lot of pent up anger around this topic. look guys there's atleast 1.5 billion east asians, plenty to go around! :)

Slightly contradicting statement there.

What's sadder - caring about how you look to others or caring about being able to speak to people?

Funny that we have this thread here and yet others where people are moaning (in pretty poorly typed sentences) that foreigners can't speak English.

Oh, the irony!

I already have one and I yes I can speak a certain east Asian language to a conversational degree. But I only learned it AFTER I entered a relationship which was completely by accident and nothing to do with race, I was introduced to this girl by my cousin and we hit it off really well, race has nothing to do with it.

It really winds me up when I see desperate little white man who are probably ugly as **** desperately chasing asian girls because they think they are easy, servants or some kind of weird sex fetish. So I'll let my anger out on any moron who wants to learn "Japanese" or "Chinese" or "Thai" for "cultural reasons". What the heck do you even know about asian culture... I suggest you get into a relationship with one before you have all these hopes, dreams and expectations, you'll find deep down they are not that different from western women, in fact, very similar, and if you think they are submissive pussy cats you really are in for a surprise!

He only asked for places where he can learn Japanese. Calm down.
