Japanese Grand Prix 2014, Suzuka - Race 15/19

Yes but even if he spins off, under the safety car he is going significantly slower and likely stuck in traffic following the safe line the other cars are taking...

You can't just say "I have seen a car spin off under SC before so that is rubbish" as an argument because the fact is that under a safety car there would be significantly less chance of him going off.

I'll come back to my original point. DOUBLE WAVED YELLOWS!

Really double waved yellows in any part of the track should put the whole track on lockdown to a set speed limit so nobody can gain any time

Let's face it yellows and double waved yellows all the drivers generally do is lift of as a gesture to show they lifted. This arises from one driver perhaps going a but faster than the other through the yellows and a potential to make up time as the other driver was slower through the area.

It is not a good situation

That would be worse as you would have drivers racing and them slamming on the brakes to get down to speed, possibly causing lock ups and possibly cars running into the back of the car in front.

Just like to point out that other racing series, notably at Le Mans, enforced speed limits in yellow zones have been introduced. That's something F1 needs to have and the sort of thing the FIA should have pioneered.

So is the safety car. 2 laps of not racing away from the start line and they were willing to declare a half points result.

It wouldn't have been. The race was stopped after one lap had been completed so points wouldn't have been awarded.

Exactly, same thing as two drivers hitting the same bit of debris and having a puncture, it's not a coincidence.

dictionary said:
coincidence
/kəʊˈɪnsɪdəns/
noun
1.
a chance occurrence of events remarkable either for being simultaneous or for apparently being connected
2.
the fact, condition, or state of coinciding
3.
(modifier) ( electronics) of or relating to a circuit that produces an output pulse only when both its input terminals receive pulses within a specified interval
The event was connected in the fact that it was the same corner they aquaplaned at and happened to crash at pretty much the same place caused by the same circumstance - the same race on the same wet track with a river aquaplaning the cars into the same destination.

If that isn't coincidence then what would you call it?

You need to take into account conditions and how difficult it is to spot flags sometimes. It's not like looking for a traffic light, you are going very quick with reduced lateral vision in heavy spray perhaps focused on a move or other car. It is often the actions of other things that bring an incident to a drivers attention first. Running marshals, crowd, cars etc.

The SC neutralises the race, yellow flags do not.

Yellow flags neutralise the race. Overtaking is not allowed until a green flag is shown. A safety car is effectively a full course yellow at a controlled pace.

I agree with this_is_gav, they need to enforce limits under double waved yellows. The technology is out there, they use it for the DRS zones.

Yellow flags do not neutralise the race. You can't overtake, however you can make up time aka race.

Actually it seems the helicopter was there and could fly and took off as the ambulance left.
They said on SSN that the helicoper was ready to go but they chose to use the ambulance (presumably for the risk of changing air pressures on a brain injury)

They also said the hospital is only 15KM from the track so not that far to go by road anyway really.

Should they FIA not look at putting a mandatory 'crash skirt' around the bottom of the rescue vehicles? Since the biggest problem is going under it or hitting the pointy parts of it? if they put a 3/4 foot skirt around these big JCB's, wouldn't that significantly reduce the risks?
