Japanese Grand Prix 2014, Suzuka - Race 15/19

No idea, it would be a complete guess, if pushed I would say faster than the pit lane limiter.

The impact is at the front, not the back of the car.

Just seen the video of the crash.

Me too. It's doing its rounds now. It's horrible.

I feel as though this horrible accident was a case of confusing flags (green and double yellows can be seen in the video), bad decision on lack of safety car IMO (either that or the tractor shouldn't have been there!) and Bianchi just being in the wrong place at the wrong time.

I hope this doesn't open up some more/new "nanny" regs. But just tighten up procedures for the same circumstances.

Having just seen the crash, it does seem to meet my suspicion that the TV cameras likely caught it, but the Director didn't show a replay because of just how brutal it was. It really wasn't obvious that anything else had happened initially and its probably that Sky spotted the lack of Bianchi's timing just before the graphic came up.

It really is a horrible crash, I hope he pulls through it.

Apparently sky (among others) didn't miss it, everyone in the pit lane were sombre you could see that, and yet the BBC were saying nothing about it, until DC finally noticed...

Hardly surprising, the BBC TV coverage is utterly dire now and has been for a while. They really ought to just admit defeat, wriggle out of whatever is left of their contract and spend the money on more pointless **** like Strictly Come Prancing or whatever.

Are you kidding? It was the worst type of weather... it was at that terrible point where it isn't clear whether to be on inters or full wets and indeed some drivers were on wets and some on inters. It's in these conditions drivers can be caught out most because it's difficult to know what to expect from the tyres.

thanks, you've proved my point... Cars were on INTERS, NOT full wets, so it cant have been that bad.

Looking at the video you can see double waved yellows during Sutil's crash, but whilst the recovery truck was moving the vehicle they changed to green. Is that normal?

I've just seen the video now too... that was unbelievably brutal and it was lucky that the JCB was not another metre further backwards. I can't believe how high that JCB left the ground!

If he survives this it will be a miracle, and we all hope that he does.

Yes. The flag was changed to green once Sutils car had been carried back beyond that flag post. Bianchi would have left control much further back though, well within the yellow flag zone and likely not even in sight of the green flag, let alone alongside it.

The issue isn't the flag, its the wider issue of drivers not slowing down through yellow flag zones because, frankly, the FIA have done sweet F A about punishing it.

Not at first I don't think.

I agree. I saw some steam, but that could have been anything. I certainly didn't see the remains of the backend of the car, and I didn't see the piece of the engine cover the marshal moved (David Croft saw it though).

Like I said, I did see the marshals waving frantically, saw Bianchi falling down the timing sheets and saw the camera crews focus in on the Marussia garage so put two and two together.

The commentators don't just look at the pictures we're seeing. They have numerous monitors with information, laptops and loads of sheets of paper plastered all about the commentary box with facts about all sorts and a window they're looking out of.
