Job hopping vs job for life

Here's mine:
8y8m - graduate global software consultancy, through development all levels, team lead and project lead.
1y11m - internal move - from development into global presages, travelled considerably saw sales/company operations
2y - internal move again - senior technical position (including sales/product and tech), I left because it was getting boring (over 12 years in the same company) and redundancies available for the volunteer

8m - self employed doing my own thing, hardware partner died so needed to get back into work

1y7m - contractor, self employed, easy work but you're always given the boring stuff as you're there to deliver..

2y7m - back in permenent senior tech position/pre-sales interesting and small unit in large company
1y - internal move up in seniority, creating proposition, business case, and responsible for the entire thing (including go-to-market, product management and integration). Position made redundant..

6m doing my own project, then so far 7 month of hard searching..

I think the change is beneficial, I think the time frame depends from person to person.

1st 6 months
2nd 4 1/2 years

Gathered a great deal of experience in the past few years. I have nearly sucked the last bit of value out of current firm, will endeavour to begin job hoping once qualified.
 
I've always been in places 3-4 years, the reason for moving usually for career protection - whereever I am becomes stagnent and stops keeping up with technology (the death nail in IT). Plus salary increases every year are usually miserly.
 
Im leaving my first grad job after 19 months :O (For more pay, and better location). Glad to hear other people think similar!

oddly the very top people in my company (engineering consultancy) have been there for 30+ years so I guess it pays off for some (however I believe they previously had better pensions etc and possibly more benefits).
 
There is no such thing a job for life. Your employer can easily get rid of you if they wanted to. Loyalty can inhibit your own experience and also your salary. Move when a good opportunity comes.

Engineering can still be like that - I've been with this company since 1997 and in my current role for over 10 years, now, although I'm the only one without a final salary pension.
 
Really depends on the job and the industry.
I left BT with a voluntary package as I couldn't see a really future that I was happy with in the company, opportunities were being stifled by movement in the market / upcoming merger with EE. I also feared that I would lose the ability to move if I stayed at the company for too long, people might see me as unable to adapt to a different work environment.

I think it is fine to remain with the one company as long as you can move roles / make the desired progression internally.
