Job Interview help!

Most interviewers will understand that you're nervous. Just be honest and tell them what they want to hear. Never ever ever never ever lie, but you already knew that ;)

Thanks guys, there's not much to research, Its Cardiff University and basically i'll be managing the IT facilities. Not bad for an 18 year old 'eh :D This is the last stage, There was different stages and there are like 3 people including me left now.

When you say managing and this is your first IT job, it sounds like you'll be an assistant of sorts. If there are only 3 people left, I would think you've already done the right thing so far. Be calm and continue... :)

Also just listen to the questions and try and give possible examples of what you would do in that situation. Try to be thorough.

Good luck.

sorry but if you had the skills and knowledge to be managing a universities IT facilities why do you need to post on here, especially as your opening post indicates you know nothing.

sweet I'll drop in my business card so they can call me to sort out the disaster next week..

I live right by the uni, I'll drop my CV in later ta for the heads up.. ive been after a job for ages

look up some key words (just know what the acronim means and very simply what its for, the person asking the questions will likley know nothing and be totally stupid and unable to get a job in the real world)

when they call it ICT punch them..

1) hub / switch / router
2) structured cableing
3) comms room / server room
4) total cost of ownership (the total cost of owning something thats why you buy a pre-built server for £2000 with 3 years next day on site hardware support than build your own for £700 with no support - the seemingle cheaper option will likley cost more)
5) ethernet / fiber
6) imaging software (create a standard build to all you to install workstations very fast)
7) WSUS - centralised patch (MS windows and MS apps) managment jsut know what it is
8) VPN
9) DHCP, DNS, WINS (wins is old now)
10) Firewall, DMZ
11) Active directory, domain controller (as in a windows domain controller), stand alone server
12) call logging software
13) SLA's, RMA's
14) Ping, TRACERT
15) SMTP, POP, IMAP, MAPI, Exchange, webmail
16) IP address, subnet mask, routing, port forwarding, NAT
17) Social engineeing, DDos attack, Virus (forget the trogen etc crap, a virus is a virus is a bit of code on your PC you dont want)
18) backups, off site backups, disaster recovery
19) virtulisation, citrix
20) UPS (As in batteries), why do servers go in an air conditioned room,
21) RAID, Mirroring, raid 5 (there are lots of raid but everyone asks about 5)
21) maybe at least know what NAS, and SAN stand for
22) 1st, 2nd and 3rd line support

well thats some of the basics they may ask about covered, know all those acrinims and terms and any non it person is gonna give you the job instantly

and remember

You are NOT the god of the network, you are looking after the users system to enable them to do their job!!! You are working for the users maintaining their system...

I'm currently preparing a bunch of competency questions for my aforementioned assessment centre this morning. I'm far more used to being asked about the recession, legal reform and generally quite high brow stuff... so I'm (genuinely) a bit worried I'm going to be stumped on their potentially difficult questions regarding my favourite red wine :p

Also had the much debated OCUK classic of 'what shall I wear?' - I've decided on smart trousers, polished shoes and a fitted shirt with cuff links, controversial, but due to the nature of bar work and the fact I'm so overqualified I think that I'm almost pushing my luck by going in this smart as it is :o
