Job interview.. Hmm

Was looking for some part time work today and handed my CV into the local fish and chip shop as they are looking for an Assistant Fryer. So off I went, and later this evening recieved a phone call asking me to go in on Friday at 8pm for an 'interview'.

What puzzles me, is what kind of questions am I possibly going to be asked to be judged on whether or not I am suitable to work as a fryer in a fish shop? I mean, it would be different if I was applying to be say... a trainee mechanic as I could be asked a whole array of questions from 'Why did you choose mechanics?' to 'What can you bring to our company/organization?' however, a small fish shop - it just seems a bit.. different.

I wonder how likely it is that the reason they asked me to go in so late on a Friday is because they want me to start pretty soon (I would have thought that a friday night would be quite busy?) and wanted to show me the ropes?

I know it's not the best job in the world for a 17 year old - but a pound is a pound no matter where you get it from :p

Depending on the role they might want to know how you are with customer facing, previous retail experience, etc. your reaction to certain scenarios and so on.

They'll probably want to see if you can be trusted around very hot oil and stuff like being able to manage loads of orders etc.

You'd be surprised at the amount of total ****wits often found in the workplace.

I'd imagine 8pm on a Friday night might be quite busy.

So, they'd have to try me out for a night to be able to work those out? :p It's just, when they say 'interview' - it's hard for me to prepare.

They're trying to be professional, that's a good start if you ask me. :)

Feel like fish and chips now. Damn you. :(

Good luck - I'll be expecting freebies now that I've offered you this advice.

Definitely and good luck.

I highly doubt they'll throw insanely complicated questions at you. Just looking to see if you're genuine, trust worthy and confident enough to handle the role.

So, you reckon it'll just end up being more of a 'show-me-tell-me' sort of thing and hardly and questions at all? :p

I hope so.

More or less but I'd be unsuprised if they sat you down and proposed a few scenarios (assuming you'd be customer facing or potentially customer facing at any point) to see how you'd handle them i.e. difficult customers, etc. if you have previous experience in this kinda environment they may ask for examples of when you've had to deal with certain situations.

Potatoes? Why would they want me to use them? They fry chips, not potatoes. Duh! :D

You've just failed.

I'd say you're fired, but you've not even been hired yet. :p

As an Assistant Fryer one would think you could master all of the fine arts in fish 'n' chip production.

However, I could be talking jibberish.

It'll be a busy time, I expect they will want you to see just how hectic it can get and if you feel you can cope with the type of work. Also they will be looking for good common sense when moving round near and handling very hot equipment in confined areas.

Don't forget personal hygiene when moving from fresh to cooked produce and after using the toilet or handling money from a customer. Its so easy to miss something quite small and cause an outbreak of food poisoning so don't be afraid to ask as many questions as poss. on how they will want you to go about this.

Remember the customer is always right even when they are not, so always deal with them politely and if one of them gets a bit stropy, don't retaliate but keep calm and polite saying you will ask the manager to sort out any problems he may have. Good luck, hope you get the job and its much better than sitting at home on your backside collecting benefits. :)

Your wondering why they want to interview you when you handed in a cv to a chip shop?

I'd have though someone would go in "alright mate, got any jobs?" would be sufficient?

"So Mr Nitrojan. You have 4 customers waiting, the person serving them has run off to have a cry in the corner, everyone is screaming at you for their orders, they're all drunk, and you've just deep fried your arm by accident. What do you do?"

The real problem is what should you wear to the interview?

You've handed in a CV to a business and they've asked you for an interview, my initial reaction would be suit, tie and shiney shoes, but at 8pm on a Friday night in the local chip shop? You may get oil in the suit which will ruin it, meaning the first 30hrs work will be just so you can buy yourself a new suit.
