Job Interview question

I wouldnt say that you should only wear a suit to jobs where you wear one.
No, I didn't really mean that. There are also plenty of jobs where you wouldnt be wearing a suit, where it would be appropriate to wear one to the interview.

I work the film industry so it's obviously the exception to the rules, but I've never worn a suit to any of my interviews. Jeans and a smart shirt. No problems. In fact back in the day I wore a suit (minus the jacket) to an interview at a web design company (summer job) and he commented on how I was over-dressed! Having said that I still got the job ;)

No jeans and no suit for these jobs - if your the right kinda person i.e. outgoing and have relevant qualifications/experience then they won't really care if you wear jeans but I don't reccomend it.

Black trousers, smart shoes and a nice shirt+tie.

How did it go? :)

Hmm, I was there on recommendation (meaning they contacted me for the job) so I assumed i might be the only one going for the job and might get it there and then.

Unfortunately, they told me at the end that there are 5 people going for the same position and there may be a second round of interviews!

Some tough questions though, such as

Take 127 hours for example, how would you run a publicity campaign for the DVD release of this production?

I answered with, I would push Danny Boyle as a reputable director, the performance of James Franco and the fact that it's based on a true story.

They said they were looking for a more creative answer though, such as surveys / quiz's etc.

Think I'll be wearing trousers with a shirt n tie as I think suit would be a bit too much.

Seems to be a shame though going back to retail after being made redundant from RBS but it's better than nothing :)

Thanks for the help guys :)

A suit, always. This should be added to the FAQ along with, 'Never, ever use Facebook when dealing with the opposite sex, use a telephone you damn manchild'.

PMSL! jobs these days make me laugh... Im nowhere short of cash so I don't work weekdays so I was looking for maybe something part time to fill the void as better doing something creative then nothing. I applied for vodaphone, part time. And they phoned me off international phone line 2 weeks later, some indian woman jibbering saying it's confirmed etc. So then a month later they call back randomly and give me a telephone interview, they said I passed it. So they say that they will phone back again the next day in morning and have sent stuff to my email. I have to study over a 15 page document about travel company or something learn everything facts n figures and do a role playing interview on it that would last something like 40 min.

For a £5.90 an hour (chicken feed) job. Needless to say I declined, im not going to waste my time going through all that as if it's for a 50 grand a year bank managers job.

Problem with wearing a suit for a general retail position, your as likely to get a proper manager/hr person doing the interview - who would take note of a suit - as you are to get someone who has been booted up the chain internally and not really suited to a management position - who will find a suit intimidating. Smart trousers, shirt and tie is a good middle road.

Well that was the shortest interview ever! Arrived 15 mins early at 1:45, Interview started at 1:55, out at 2:04. Went well and they will let me know by tuesday/wednesday.

Wore a shirt, trousers, tie and a waistcoat :)

What the?
Were you asked for your name, dob and a guilty/not guilty plea only or something?!

Lol, The manager told me they were very short staffed so it would be a quick interview. He's got two more people to interview on monday so as soon as thats done, He said he will phone the successful candidates up on tuesday.

Was asked about my previous jobs, what hours I can do, any commitments, interests and hobbies etc. Was quite friendly.

Oh well, fingers crossed :)

The secret is.. wear a suit.

If you feel overdressed, you can always take the tie off and ditch the jacket.
